I love Joshilyn Jackson's book. She is one of those quiet authors whose books are packed with strong women. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the story turns in a different direction that allows the characters to be redeemed.
I listened to this on audiobook, based on a recommendation from Modern Mrs. Darcy. The narrator was fine - she had the accent to match the setting of the book. However, I thought the plot itself was extremely heavy-handed and I really disliked the main character. I kept listening because I really did want to know what happened. The author wrote the story such that the reader didn't quite know what was truth and there were a couple "twists". I didn't feel the emotional impact that it seemed like the author was going for with the main plot of the book. I also thought the author described things WAY TOO MUCH, to the point of being laughable. I suppose one could think that her descriptions were well-written and interesting, but I thought they were distracting and heavy-handed. I doubt I will read other works in this author's repertoire.
I found Gods in Alabama because I had previously listened to Backseat Saints and really enjoyed it, not knowing that the author had written Gods... first, and that ...Saints was based on a character who first made her appearance in Gods.... I think I enjoyed this one even more. Catherine Taber is an excellent narrator. Definitely a good listen!
This is in my top 5 of favorite books. I love how Jackson developed the main characters and their relationships. Have read it 4 times now, and love it every time!
I enjoyed this book, but it did not quite live up to all the hype that I had heard prior to reading it. I liked the occasional plot twists, but I felt that male characters could have been better developed.
I was not sure if I wanted to give this book three stars or four. My rating is:
⭐️- didn't even finish
⭐️⭐️- kinda liked it - enough to find out the ending
⭐️⭐️⭐️- liked it
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- really liked it-enough to recommend it
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- loved it. Could not put it down. Took me to another world. Enjoyed every moment.
I feel like this book is 3.5 stars. As I was listening to it, I liked it and then I didn't and then I did and then I didn't. In the end I actually ended up being surprised by the end and enjoyed the development of the characters. Especially how they mended broken relationships and misunderstandings.
Overall it was a good story and I've enjoyed other books by this author. I will be sure to try more books by her.

One of the characters in this book appears in her later book, Backseat Saints. I love how she tied the two together in a small way to make it even more interesting. A crime in the main character's youth comes back to haunt her in adulthood and she must return home to Alabama to face her fears.
This book may have my favorite opening line of any book ever. Ever! I also loved the Southern nuances in this story- the story itself wasn't the strongest, but it was so warming to read, so familiar in that down South kind of way. I really enjoyed this- and would recommend it without hesitation to the right kind of reader.
Didn’t see the end coming, but it made sense when it did - always the sign of a good book.
Best book!!! Fast read!!! Loved it.. love story, mystery, family drama....
