This was fun! Such an adventure with Zane and his gang! Love it! I loved coming back to this world and this adventurous tale.

I felt personally bored at some parts, but overall such a great story.

I liked this better the second time, though I still think the first book is by far the best. Ren was much more tolerable in this one so I'm a bit less wary of reading the new series.

Unfortunately, this series really declined for me.

Summary: Zane is excitedly waiting for when he can train at the Shaman Institute for Higher Order Magic so he can be reunited with Brooks. While waiting, he's been looking all over the world with a demon for godborns to tell them about the truth of who they are. After finding all of them and being betrayed, he learns that the Maya gods are missing. Zane and the other godborns have to work together to bring things back the way they were.
Characters: Zane's and Brooks's relationship was really fun and interesting to read about. We also learned more about Marco and Louis and what their characters are like. Adrick and Alana were also fascinating characters and their twin dynamic was cool.

SERIES AS A WHOLE (Unpopular opinion): A lot of times I find that fantasy authors get too engrossed in the lore and mechanics and forget about the fundamentals of character writing. I never got a real sense of who anyone was - Even the narrator, Zane. To me his voice was so bland and unmemorable.

The books felt very disjointed from each other. There were parts of each one that I enjoyed: Ah-Puch in The Fire Keeper, the destiny strands in The Shadow Crosser, to name just a couple. But in the end "The Storm Runner" trilogy ends up feeling like a very watered down Percy Jackson. This felt particularly so with the shadow crossing dialogue on page 288 which was extremely derivative of the dialogue with Nico at the end of The House of Hades. Cervantes's decision to employ time travel was also...a choice.

I really only stuck with the series to learn more about Aztec and Mayan mythology, which I did. So in that aspect, Cervantes did her job. But do those deities have the same lasting impact as La Llorona from Paola Santiago or Poseidon from Percy Jackson? Definitely not.
