The Moon and more

Sarah Dessen

3.51 AVERAGE

Don't get me wrong, I love Sarah Dessen as much as the next 12 year old girl, but The Moon and More just wasn't my favorite of hers. I found myself annoyed with Theo and in turn disappointed in our protagonist Emaline. Dessen built up Theo's faults so much is was hard to love or even tolerate him.
The ending was refreshing and not at all what I was expecting, especially from Dessen. I did enjoy this book, however it would not be the first of hers I'd recommend.

Can I just tell you how much I love that Sarah Dessen has crafted these little communities that her series take place in? All of the character overlap has to be one of my favorite parts of her books. I laughed out loud to see the reappearance of "Say no, no, no to Tallyho!" It was great to see how Auden has moved along with her life, find out more about the eccentric shop owner Clyde, and meet a whole new cast of characters in The Moon and More. Dessens books are very familiar and feel like sitting down with an old friend.

Typically I love Sarah Dessen, even though her books are all the same, usually. Girl has problems. Girl meets boy. They fall in love. Etc. This one seemed to be following that pattern, but I just could not bring myself to approve of Emaline's relationship with Theo. He started out with potential. He was boisterous and nervous and cute and awkward, but then, out of nowhere, he turned into a jerk and I couldn't reconcile those two people to be the same character. It just felt off to me.

Summer read
Familiar world
lovable characters
not so lovable characters
characters surprising you
in good and bad ways
my favourite Dessen main character
who had a sweet little brother
loved the story conclusion.

This was one of my favourite Dessen reads. I loved Emmaline's journey and Emmaline is probably my favourite Dessen main character :). And Benji is the sweetest, I'd love to see more of him.

What can I say? Sarah Dessen never fails to come up with a satisfying story. Picking up this book and returning to the beach town of Colby was a perfect way to mark the beginning of summer. That town and it's cast of quirky and lovable characters always makes for a read that is lighthearted, fun, but poignant at the time. This is most definitely a good summer read.

The last in my epic read-every-Sarah-Dessen book journey and I am so sad about it! Again, read her books in order so you can see what happens to characters over the years.

WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY IS THIS.

The literal synopsis of this book is "Girl dates intolerable boy for 400 pages before realizing boy is intolerable. Book ends."

IT IS SO PAINFUL TO READ AHHHHH.

Sarah Dessen why would you do this to me.

Also later on in the book, said intolerable boy says "You're not just any other girl" (the ugly stepsister of "not like other girls") and our lovely protagonist is all wow........I really needed 2 hear that. So tru.

Basically even the good thing of this book turned out bad!!!!

Bottom line: (Angela/Pam/Oscar from The Office in unison voice): Unbelievable! Un-be-liev-a-ble.

CURRENTLY-READING UPDATE

“And if I was any other girl, I would have gotten over it by now anyway.”

Now, her eyes narrowed. “You know I hate when you say that.”

“What?”

“That any-other-girl thing.” She flipped her hand, as if literally swatting the words away. “People are not uniform, Emaline. There is no such thing as any other girl.”

OKAY SURE 2013 SARAH DESSEN COME FOR MY LIFE

every YA contemporary author of today needs to get on that 2013 dessen sh*t stat i'm having the time of my life

I love pretty much all Sarah Dessen books. Recognizable patterns in her writing. Just love it

Story
It's been a rainy spring/summer here, so I was definitely excited to pick up a beach read and live vicariously through the characters. When I started reading, I was immediately transported back to Colby (a familiar setting that I loved in Along for the Ride), a small beach town in tourist season.

What I love most about Dessen's novels are her strong characters and her realistic depictions of family relationships and friendships. I identified with Emaline and her confusion about where to go and what to do after high school. The summer before college is such an interesting time in a person's life, and I love reading stories about it. This one was no exception!

I normally swoon over the love interests in Dessen's novels, but for some reason I just wasn't feeling either Luke or Theo. I'm glad the book wasn't entirely focused on the romance angle. It was interesting to see Emaline work through family issues and ultimately choose to take her own path for the future.

Audio
I tend to gravitate toward the audio versions of Dessen's stories. The narrator's always do a fabulous job, and Gallerani is no exception. She sounded believable as an older teen and made Emaline's character come alive. The sound and production quality were excellent, and it was a pleasant listening experience. I will continue to listen to Sarah Dessen books (and also put the hardcovers on my shelf because they are just so pretty!).
