Sarah Dessen

3.51 AVERAGE

This just wasn't the same for me as Dessen's other books, or maybe it was too much of the same. Whatever it was, I had a hard time getting into this one. I found the constant referencing to the title distracting and just felt indifferent towards most of the characters. I eventually did get into the story- about half-way through, and from then on it was the Dessen I know and love. So, a solid 3 stars.

I found this novel difficult to put down. There was a good balance of predictability and surprise.

Actual rating 3.75 (reread 2024, first read in 2013). Possibly my least favourite Dessen reread so far but this does serve as the first book I’ve finished in a month after a bad reading slump so it gets points for that.

I don't know if I'm just getting older or something, but Sarah Dessen isn't as appealing as she used to be. I liked a lot of stuff from the book. Emaline was a great character as was most of the people from Colby were great, but the romance was shit. I never liked Theo or Luke, but then I kind of really liked the fact
Spoilerthat she didn't end up with either of them.
Her father's quite shit too and it's sad that he couldn't really see things from her perspective.

I don't know. I mean, I have thoughts and all, of course: http://mclicious.org/2015/05/28/the-moon-and-more/

It was so fun to go back and reread this book! Somehow Sarah Dessen always manages to have the right book just when I need it.

I was expecting more from this book. I thought it was kind of slow and I wasn't a fan of the love interest. I actually would have preferred her with her cheating ex. I was happy the way it ended though, not your typical HEA but one in my opinion none the less.

4.5 stars; best Dessen book since just listen and the truth about forever. Emaline is a great narrator. Loved the ending; glad she ended up with neither guy.

This was an interesting book. Emaline is in the middle of last summer before she leaves Colby and heads off to college. Her father is back in the picture for the first time in a long time and it's not going smoothly. Benji, her step brother, is also in Colby and he and Emaline are forming a bond. Emaline and Luke's three year relationship is rocky and both are wondering what is going on. Theo and Ivy are in Colby making a documentary and Theo is pursuing Emaline. As you can see, there is a lot going on for Emaline. The story is fast-paced and sometimes laugh out loud funny.

Dessen always impressed me with how well she writes a romance that always feels right at the end no matter what. She writes great characters and stories that have so much depth. Emaline has a lot going on in the summer before college - her boyfriend is restless in their relationship, she’s stressed about college, her biological dad fails to keep promises and be present in her life at the crucial moments, and now there’s this new guy in town helping to shoot a documentary who promises to shake up her small town life with his big city dreams. Emaline just wants to do big things but family and relationships are getting in her way... and is what she wants really what she needs?

I would say this is a solid book. I appreciate a realistic romance and I always enjoy books that center on family dynamics. It definitely isn’t a favorite of mine out of Dessen’s novels but it was enjoyable to read!
