Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. A thoroughly fun and engaging read.
This is basically a rehashing of Moreta's story, only with no dragons (as major characters anyway), more death and a heroine I could never really get behind. If you've read Moreta you really know all you need to know about the 6th Pass, but Nerilka's pretty short so you might as well get it over with.
I don't remember why I didn't care for this book as much when I was younger. It might have been because I was invested in Moreta/Alessan, and for reasons that are obvious if you've read Moreta that couldn't be endgame. Reading it now as an adult, I have an entirely different perspective and I really like Nerilka's practicality and Alessan and Nerilka's relationship once he's out of the grief depression spiral.
(Also we got EVEN MORE WORLDBUILDING, Ie, what's expected of lady holders and holder's daughters and the interactions between lord/lady holders and regular holders, and we all know I love that sort of thing)

2015 Audio Read (1st time listening instead of reading).
It's a good novella. I had some quality issues with the recording that hampered the experience a bit, but it's a quick and satisfying read.

Ehh...I find as I return to Pern stories in my old age and re-read them that I like the depiction of the women's lot less and less. Nerilka has a strong voice, and this ancillary tale is engaging - but I genuinely disliked the depiction of her "romance", if you can even use that word, with Alessan.
More like 2.5 stars for the unfulfilling relationship Nerilka ends up in; but McCaffrey is still a talented writer with an impressive vocabulary, and I must award style points where points are due.

It was going very well - I liked Nerilka a lot and it was great to see more of a Holder's life and see how resourceful she was getting across Pern and in all the good work she was doing - right up until Alessan attempted to rape her at the end. That not only left a foul taste in my mouth regarding the whole book, but also spoiled [b:Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern|61958|Moreta Dragonlady of Pern (Pern, #7)|Anne McCaffrey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1204647178s/61958.jpg|3419] for me, because now whenever I read that book this one's going to be in the back of my mind.
