Ho scelto questo libro di getto, lasciandomi guidare dall’istinto e subendo un fascino che ancora non sapevo ben spiegarmi, e ben poco sapevo della sua autrice e di quello che vi avrei trovato scritto, se non ciò ch’era riportato sul retro di copertina. Salvo uno sbigottimento iniziale, sono stata a dir poco travolta dalla forza, dalla potenza e dall’indipendenza della figura di Modesta, che non solo affascinava ogni singolo personaggio, donna o uomo che fosse, ma anche io stessa che leggevo.
Per quanto si tratti di una protagonista singolare (seppur coi propri frammenti di attualità), quasi mi trovavo a giustificarla, per me la sua vicenda continuava ad avere senso al di là di ogni atto più che condannabile. In egual misura ho vissuto la medesima esperienza nell’approcciarmi allo stile di scrittura, al fluido alternarsi fra prima e terza persona che, nonostante i miei limiti nell’ambito, trovavo più che sensato e gradevole a livello anche uditivo.

“L’arte della gioia”, oltre a essere un romanzo a suo modo monumentale, è l’ennesima testimonianza, l’ennesimo grido di una voce femminile che troppo a lungo è stata costretta a tacere (vuoi per scelte editoriali, vuoi per, in tempi più recenti, programmi di letteratura che ancora non riescono a dare giustizia a determinati nomi) e che, ora, si ritrova con la possibilità di rivivere assieme alla sua protagonista.

If I could give ten stars to this book, I would! The story of Modesta it's a passionate coming of age tale about freedom, feminine pleasure, love in its pure form, and much more, which spans across Italy in the 20th Century. A book I'd definitely recommend!
