Great snapshot into the creation of the fundamental technology that allowed for the rest of the expense to happen; the Epstein drive. Surprisingly rich characters for such a short story.

Very short book. Seems like a teaser for total science fiction.

I kinda wish I had read this short story before reading the first book, it really is just a perfect little set-up for the series. Human fallibility meets with cultural intermixing meets with the hard realities of space, and comes out the other end with something like hope for the future in spite of it all.
Perhaps because of that, it reads more like a prologue chapter to a book rather then its own story. But what a prologue chapter!

I enjoyed this in-between-books-1-and-2 story FAR more than the other one, Gods Of Risk. Where the other story had very uninteresting new characters, this tale's protagonist is very interesting and worth knowing his story. What serves as a prequel of the entire saga, Drive sheds some light on the technology of space travel 150ish years prior to book 1, and how it's possible in the time of the main books. Really good read for those interested in the worldbuilding of the Expanse series.

Fun little introduction to the hard (hardish?) scifi world of The Expanse series, from the perspective of a Martian inventor working on more efficient ship drives. Political economics, light personal drama and technical suspense are woven together nicely enough to leave me wanting more of the series.
Side note: I don't know the politics of the authors but this book is seems admirably historical materialist in its read of future political economy.

Nice, very brief novella about the inventor of the Epstein Drive, which is what transports the characters of The Expanse through space.
