Comprei este livro pela capa. Vi-a e disse para mim que a história deveria ser interessante. Adorei a narrativa tripartida da vida das três mulheres mas fique decepcionada pos esperava mais da história da dona presente, mas cada coisa a seu tempo.
O elemento centra da história é uma chocolateira branca, a história de como foi feita, de como passou de mão em mão até chegar à sua dona actual que a estima como um tesouro. A acção desenrola-se ora numa Barcelona actual, ora nos séculos XiX e XVIII e em comum três mulheres invulgares a quem esta chocolateira pertenceu.
A história começa ao contrário por assim dizer, inicia-se com a chocolateira a partir-se e termina com a descrição de ocmo esta foi elaborada. E foi aqui que fiquei decepcionada pois pensava que a história ainda retomava a história do início, contando-nos os acontecimentos após a chocolateira ser partida, mas não a história fica-se por aí. E eu queria tanto saber o que vinha a seguir! É quase como nos dizerem: vais ter uma grande surpresa, a surpresa é... e a pessoa não nos conta mais nada e ri-se!
Gostei muito deste livro, é diferente pela narrativa, pelas personagens e adoro o tema claro: o chocolate!

Didn't know at all what that book would bring but it was an amazing journey through the centuries and the meaning of chocolate.
I liked the idea of going back and slowly discovering the history of the "Schokoladenkanne" (I read it in German I don't know the English word..).

Şaisprezece cioburi de porţelan alb de diferite mărimi şi forme şi un tub de adeziv „de-ăla care lipeşte tot”. Max se dăruieşte total jocului, deloc amuzant, de a le potrivi între ele, de parcă ar asambla un puzzle. E trecut de trei şi jumătate, ar trebui să fie în pat, căci peste câteva ore trebuie să se scoale, dar i-a promis Sarei că o s-o facă şi nu vrea să renunţe.
Ia, unul câte unul, cioburile, şi le caută un posibil tovarăş. Cu cât găseşte mai mulţi, cu atât mai puţine sunt posibilităţile de eroare rămase pe masă. Le unge pe margini şi le alătură, presând uşor cât îşi face adezivul efectul. Priveşte mulţumit rezultatul. La unele, cicatricea aproape că nu se vede. La altele e mai greu, marginea nu e atât de netedă, au sărit aşchii mici. Încet-încet, Max reconstruieşte ce părea pierdut pe vecie. Merită să mori de somn după o petrecere atât de lungă, ca în noaptea asta. Sara o să aibă o mare surpriză când o să intre de dimineaţă în bucătărie şi o să vadă cât s-a chinuit.
A fost o noapte fantastică. Întâi, confidenţele dintre doi prieteni de-o viaţă care se regăsesc într-un moment bun. Pe urmă Sara, şarmantă, frumoasă, decisă. Ce se petrece cu femeile spre patruzeci de ani? Un soi de proces de concentrare a calităţilor le face mai pline de viaţă, mai inteligente, mai senine, mai atrăgătoare decât cu douăzeci de ani în urmă. Aşa şi-a văzut soţia noaptea asta şi a fost mândru. Mândru că e a lui, ce sentiment primitiv, anormal, străin lui, îşi zice Max, dar, trebuie să recunoască, sentimentul ăsta i-a luminat noaptea.

I bought this last year at a book sale because the cover was pretty and the synopsis sounded good. It's been sitting on my shelf since because I was never drawn to picking it up. I put it on the top of my pile to read this month. I have a rule that if I get to fifty pages and am not enjoying the book, I put it down. That's what happened with this book. The prologue was sweet, I liked it, but then the first story came and I just wasn't interested.

I received a copy of this book from Nudge Books in an exchange for an honest review.
I chose this book because of the title as I though it would be full of wonderful mouthwatering descriptions of the chocolate making process, so I was very disappointed to discover that there were hardly any. The stories in this book are more about relationships both in and outside marriage and of employer/employee relations. I admit that I struggled with it but was determined to read it through in the hope that it would improve.
I didn't warm to the characters or the style of writing in the first two stories, although Candida in the second part was so incredibly spoilt and well written. I loved the main characters and the writing in the third and final story.
I wonder if perhaps something was missing in the translation of the first two stories as they came across as quite stiff and formal, whereas the final story was much easier and I would even say a joy to read compared to the previous two. I enjoyed the underlying story of the little chocolate pot and how it came to be in the possession of the various characters throughout the book. Maybe the story is really about the chocolate pot and not the women. I'm not sure I rush out and buy a book by this author or recommend it to friends.
