The central character in this novel feels like a journeyer, almost like Alice through the looking glass, observing the world with roots that run deep into the earth. She tells us about her mountain village, about the horrible fates that have befallen those that live there, the ways in which corruption and curses and violence have created chasms between everyone. It is heartwrenching and horrible. I did not know much about the real life situations facing women in Guerrero, but the author conveys the truth embedded within this fiction in a compelling way, and it made me want to know more. The story then feels unreal yet too real, and as you follow Ladydi through her life, you're constantly confronted by violence, and still, the will to persist and survive.
I loved the voices and the setting was unique and important. I would have loved a little more depth. I was sad to be finished.

"She told me to tell yoh that love is not a feeling. It's a sacrifice."
This is not a happy story; so don't read it looking for one.
It was annoying to me that there were no quotation marks where people were speaking. I am not a fan of that writing style. But the way that Clement describes the landscape, appearance, thought, etc counterbalanced my annoyance of the lack of quotation marks.
I found the characters lacking a bit but that might have been because you were not supposed to get attached to them? The men see them as objects waiting to be sold and used, so perhaps that is the way Clement wanted to present them.
The topic of this book is a huge issue that a lot of people do not talk about, so I think it is good that people are reading this book. It's not an easy topic to read about or discuss but it needs awareness.

quick read.
the exciting part of the plot took place almost at the very end of the book - maybe the last 5 chapters.
it was interesting but not something i'd probably re-read again.
