What it's about: The life of a young girl in a village on a mountain in Mexico that is overrun by drug lords. Girls are stolen regularly from their homes. Families have to hide their children to protect them.

Why I read it: The book caught my eye in the "new" section of the library. After reading the description, I thought it might be interesting.

Favorite idea: Hope.

Im taking a break from this book but will try a reread later on

Such flat, unfinished characters - I just didn't care enough about any of them to find a reason to give this one 3 stars. I also found it hard to follow the chronology of Ladydi's life due to the scattered storytelling (and I just didn't like her enough to do the work to really figure it out), so this was not a terribly enjoyable read for me.

the writing was slightly repetitive and the characterization fell flat for me at times, but i really loved this story. it was beautiful, insightful, and heartbreaking. ladydi’s story will stay with me forever.

I was shocked at what little understanding this author had of Mexican culture and society. I was even more shocked to find that she claims to have lived in Mexico. There are so many major and minor inaccuracies in the portrayal of these women and their lives. Yes, it's a work of fiction. But even the author claims it to be based on fact and interviews with real women. I think not.
