3.5⭐️
I wanted to love this book soooo bad, but I just couldn’t. I really liked Jane as a main character, as it was refreshing to read about a woman who defies the societal shackles of her status both as a peniless orphan, and as a woman. I definitely preferred the first half of the book as opposed to the second.
I have quite a few criticisms, the main one being that I could not fucking stand Mr Rochester - he was so manipulative, condescending, straight up annoying and also he was literally 20 years older than Jane! I just could not get behind him as a love interest. I also found that some parts of the book were more captivating than ofhers, as unfortunately I found myself passively reading and not properly engaging with the text more often than I would’ve liked.
However, despite the fact that I already knew the main plot twist in the book, I thought that Brontë was brilliant at building up suspense and creating a gothic atmosphere. I also loved how throughout the novel we got to watch as Brontë made little criticisms about Victorian society, particularly challenging the idea of “a woman’s place”.
On the whole, I think that Brontë is a splendid writer and it’s definitely worth giving Jane Eyre a go (I know it’s well-loved by many people worldwide).

I quite liked this book. It had mystery, romance, character development. It wasn’t the type of book that held a valuable message or anything (for me), just a solid read - worthwhile to be sure.
