I love Tom Allen’s comedy and watching him on An Extra Slice is easily one of my favourite television treats each year, so I went into this book with high hopes. It was a far sweeter, more introspective book than I was expecting - lots of humour (especially around lifts, so sweet) and warmth and he came across quite differently from his stage persona. However I would have loved more about his career and experience as a successful stand up, I think reading this so soon after Rob Beckett’s book didn’t do any favours, as I really loved Beckett’s examination of class and privilege. I eagerly await future Tom Allen books though as I think he’ll only get better as he finds his groove.

Tom, this is far too short!
Aside from that, this book is brilliant. It’s both humorous and heartwarming. I highly recommend the audiobook as the man himself narrates and it is E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G!!!

A fantastic quick read which somehow voiced so much I had never verbalised about my own upbringing as a repressed queer person living in a suffocating suburbia where 'keeping up appearances' was more important than being yourself. I have always adored Tom and this gave a great insight into his life and journey in accepting himself with no shame. Loved it.
