This was a cute little YA Novel. Although this is the second book in a series, I wasn't lost in what was happening (or I wasn't aware of how lost I was- ha!). The author did a great job of explaining the small details of what happened in the prior book, which I believe was about Felicity's brother. Felicity is an amazing young woman who just wants to be able to study medicine, but because she is a woman, none of the hospitals or schools would allow it. Throughout the book we follow Felicity on an unplanned adventure as she fights for what is right and strengthen bonds and friendships. I really did enjoy this novel.

This was fantastic. The book itself was a solid 4-4.5 stars, but the author’s note at the end just put it over the top. I love a good author’s note.

Besides the fact that the writing style is so easy to digest, I think what I liked most was the frank exploration of what it might be like to be an unconventional girl in the 18th century. It’s oddly similar to the present day, which seems weird. At first. But then I thought about all the people who have been first, or mad pioneers, or misfits, and so often they are boiled down to a few discrete episodes of struggle, a failure, maybe several, but in the end, success (even if success comes posthumously). And these people end up seeming almost superhuman.

But Felicity’s story is bogged down with struggle. It’s weighted with internal self-doubt and external ridicule. Each time the reader sees her putting on prickly self-confidence like a really uncomfortable corset, we also see how it ends up coming through like condescension or arrogance, alienating people around her. And then the reader watches Felicity slowly pick it all apart: the absurd gender stereotypes, her internal doubt, her bristly manner, her failures, what it is she really wants. And that process, that persistent struggle, happens in all times. And it is so easy to imagine it happening to many unknown people, each one breaking down rigid tradition just a little bit. For Felicity, success isn’t really about becoming a doctor, making an earthshattering discovery, or shattering every stereotype. It’s about finding her own path. And that’s universal. And amazing.

I am genuinely speechless. This is one of the best books I have ever read and probably the most perfect sequel to ever be written. I want to erase my memory so I can experience reading this for the first time again.

I loved the plot so much, I think I may have even preferred it to the first book in the series (and that’s saying a lot because I loved that plot with all my heart!!) I literally never knew what was going to happen next and it was so fun! And the tension at the end of the book had me holding my breath and having to pause every two seconds to prepare myself and just aaaaaaaaaa I swear I can’t talk about it I’m still screaming over how good everything is and I have no. Words.

It’s actually embarrassing how many people I’ve cried to over how much I love the characters in this book…. I don’t think I’ve ever been so inspired and in awe of every single character. They were incredible - so real and well rounded and layered and empowering. I loved how they were written and their relationships were written even better. The development of Johanna and felicity’s friendship still has me reeling. Felicity and Sim has me dying and the trio as a whole honestly just owns me.

I loved that it explored how different types of women can be strong, or specifically that strength isn’t defined by how they look or act. I really want to quote at least 100 different parts that were so incredibly and beautifully written I want them tattooed on me. I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH I CANT EVEN TALK IM SO AAAAAAAAAA

AND AAA MONTY AND PERCY IN THIS WERE EVERYTHINGGGGG
I love seeing their relationship so much, I actually can’t even talk about it or I’ll cry lmao and I love seeing their relationship with felicity, they’re actually the perfect trio and no one can change my mind. Would I die for them all? Yes. Yes I would.

I just loved that we got so many characters back as well as new ones I can cry over and I just damn I wish I was better at words cause this book honestly deserves a whole book written about how good it was. I felt like everything was handled so perfectly, I’m so satisfied with the way everything turned out and I will be reading this over and over and over until I die :)

I really wanted to like this because I loved Felicity in the first book and I want to see her succeed in fulfilling her dream of studying medicine, but unfortunately I'm having a hard time becoming invested in this story. Maybe I'll give it another go some other time.
