Me: I don't think I like Poems
Husband: You don't like Emily Dickinson's poems.

They were okay, but I really don't think poetry as a genre is for me.

similar to Drake, there's just too many misses to give her that much credit

Loved this collection! I am so glad I picked up some more Emily Dickinson because other than a few poems here and there, I hadn’t read much of her work. Poetry always really inspires and calms me— always keeps me in a good perspective— and gets my creativity flowing for my own writing. This collection got me in that creative state. I was inspired to write some poems in Dickinson’s style which was very fun, and it allowed me to experiment and broaden myself which I deeply enjoyed.

There were definitely a good few gems in this collection which I will list specifically below for future reference. But before I do that, I just need to bring up Dickinson’s obsession with bees. There was a Bee Movie quantity of bees in her work, and while I didn’t mind and thought it was beneficial in setting the atmosphere for many poems, I did find the sheer volume of mentionings of the little creatures to be funny, and eventually, I may or may not have started drawing little bees in the margins every time bees came up. Suffice it to say, I now have a swarm of bees within my copy’s pages.

Here is a list of my favorite poems in this collection:

Although some of the poems in here where quite pretty, I don't think I'll be reading any more of Dickinson's poetry at least for a long while. This was more than enough. I just don't think it was for me.

"Just such a retrospect
Hath the perfected life,
A past of plank and nail,
And slowness, - then the scaffolds drop -
Affirming it a soul."

What did I think?? Ms. Dickinson, you are an incomparable, starry beast and I love you.

I'm not a really experienced poem reader, but even I can tell that masterpieces are masterpieces.

Dickinson's poems are beautifully written and the themes that she chose to write (time, love, hate, nature, etc.) were all portrayed perfectly. She's like an artist using words as the paintbrush to create some really outstanding scenes. I also love the fact that everything she writes about are always from her life experiences so that there's a lot of substance in addition to the elegant appearance of her poems. Some poems are actually very philosophical (she talks of eternity quite frequently) which makes them thought provoking too.

In terms of form, I've noticed that she writes a lot of 4-line-stanza poems and that often the second and fourth line would rhyme. She's not particularly ambitious with her form but I still very much appreciate the ingenuity of the way she puts lines together.

Some excerpts that I love:
"I had no time to hate, because
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity."

"Nor was I hungry; so I found
That hunger was a way
Of persons outside windows,
The entering takes away."

Absolutely amazing.
