Emily Dickinson is one of my favorite poets. I love the way she writes about love and loss. Getting to read a full compiled book of her poems was such a treat!

I’m not much of a poetry person, but I’ve always loved Emily Dickinson (at least the few poems of hers that I knew). Watching Dickinson only made me more curious about her, so I wanted to read more of her work for myself.

I found that I love her brain imagery and death personification and thoughts on faith and God. I love that she contradicts herself and doesn’t always draw conclusions. I love that she can write poems and poems about the smallest things like the sun and bees. I love the way she uses punctuation on her own terms to shape her words and meanings.

Maybe this is too reductive, but my conclusion is that I think Emily Dickinson is cool. Very very cool. I want her to be my friend or at least my hypothetical dinner guest. She was ahead of her time!! I want to pick her brain about everything (and ask her about the mysteries of her life...).

I definitely recommend her poems, especially to anyone who might not usually choose to read poetry.

Simply wonderful.

Just as Thomas Wentworth Higginson said in the preface to the first series “these verses will seem to the reader like poetry torn up by the roots, with the rain and dew and earth still clinging to them, giving a freshness and a fragrance not otherwise to be conveyed”.
This book with all her verses truly feels like a gift Emily accidentally left behind her for us to enjoy. She treats so perfectly a diverse variety of themes from death and immortality, to nature and life cycles, as well as love and loss.
The complete poems swept me away and I struggled to choose favourites because so many of them were so stunning. I cannot ask poetry lovers to give this collection a try: it’s truly worth your time.
