This book is a fantastic read. It's been described as a groundhog day kind of novel and I can see why. Our protagonist a twenty something unnamed student has the chance to see how his life can undergo small changes if, when making certain decisions, he could choose differently. His friendship with Ozu, his best friend is awkward but thanks to the opportunity that he has to make these little shifts, all his relationships will suffer slight changes. What I like about this premise is that those decisions are not big and transcendental, but almost casual. What would have happened if instead of choosing the Ablutions film club he had chosen to be part of the Mellow softball club, or the Lucky Cat Chinese Food organization or if he had answered the weird add that was searching for disciples? He will have the answer to all these questions and the chance to live different, at least for a couple of years.
All the storylines are equally engaging and the characters so well constructed that reading this book is extremely satisfying. If you love Japanese literature I strongly encourage you to read this book.

i loved the attention to detail. i typically have trouble reading about unlikeable protagonists, but there was something about this one that i just couldn’t put down.

It grew tedious at times because of the repetitive nature of the book. I really liked the last chapter because it was so different from everything else we had seen thus far. I feel like these types of stories work best in movie format.
I liked the little threads throughout. Like something was odd in one timeline and then we find out how it got there in another. Which in that case, I guess it's less timeline and more some kind of multiverse? I'm not sure.
I think it was a unique and interesting narrative, and I'll definitely be looking for more books by him just maybe not his multiple universe ones.
