I'm not an unbiased reader of this book. I lived in Japan for about half a year, and am lived with fond memories of Kyoto. All the city details year, especially centered around the Kamo River, were richly meaningful. Additionally, I was for a time in a Japanese university club - Bukatsu - in my case a lacrosse team. The club truly is at the center of many Japanese university students' experience, which is a major theme in the book but might make less sense to unaware readers. Between Kyoto and the Bukatsu themes I was intrigued, and it is a well written account exploring free will or its absence among a group of interesting characters.
I would suggest this book in particular for someone who is planning to study abroad in Japan, or has done so in the past.

I want to preface by stating that I had not even heard of the anime before picking up this book to read. It's hard to explain what I liked so much about this book. It really shows how much of life would end up being the same despite different choices just because that's how being human works. No matter what club the character joins, he ends up meeting the same group of people just in slightly different manners.
I loved the writing/translation and it made the book very engaging.
