I must say that Kalayna Price's first Alex Craft book was entertaining, but it got really good at the end, so much so, I got truly curious and excited about reading the next in the series.

Alex is a Grave Witch and can raise shades, not ghosts, but lingering shadows, and because of this she is pulled into something darker. Someone is killing people and now that person is after her too. To her help she has a detective, Falin, who anyone would get at once is the love interest. Sure I like him, he sounds hot and after these two have worked through their issues with each other things might happen. But yes there is someone else too and someone who I sure have my fingers crossed for; Death. When he showed up at the scene I was smitten at once. He did not say much but I am obviously on his team. Since she talks to the dead she sees him around a lot and what is there not to like.

This book has a lot of questions in it. Who to trust? What is going on? Who is the bad guy and who exactly is Falin? Not to mention, Death. There is also things happening all the time so no chance to grow bored here.

The world is also interesting as the Fae and witches came out a few decades ago and now they all live together. Not peacefully but getting by. We do not learn that much about the Fae but I would like to know more, since they keep to themselves.

All in all a good book, that got even better. I do want to read more and keep my hopes up for Death. I just hope Alex sees it, too.

A nice debut to a series that hopefully will keep on getting better since she sure seems to know how to twist things around.

Alex Craft is a grave witch meaning she can raise shades of the dead and see ghosts, she's also been disowned by her family, so when her sister calls her crying and begging her to raise Coleman's shade to find out what happened to him. Alex caves and calls her police friend to see if she can get a look at him and her friend agrees but only if she raises the shade of his latest victim because he's getting nowhere with IDing her. Things don't exactly go as planned though, murder, mayhem and madness ensue.
I really liked Alex, I especially liked that there is a cost for using her powers, calling her grave magic has left her night blind and occasionally just blind altogether. There is some brief steaminess in the story but Alex is a hit it and quit it instead of a relationship kind of girl. I'm glad I liked this because I bought the first 3 books all at once at least now I don't have to wait to read the next one.

It's been a while since I've ventured into the world of PNR so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to really get into the story. Thankfully I had no reason to be worried - this book was amazing. It had its challenges, as novels beginning a series do and it took a while to understand the world building and terms but I found it fairly easy to acclimatise. The story was interesting and kept me coming back for more - and although Alex was more or less your typical kick-ass female lead, she seemed real enough to relate to.

Already reading the next installment! Recommended.

Original

I always love it when authors come up with really original stories. You're definitely not going to find another story involving grave witches, wyrd witches, far, and romance with Death anytime soon. I can't wait for the next book!!!

So, this was another fluffy Vagina Fantasy type of novel. One where the heroine is some flavor of magical, unique, powerful person who can save the world from something no one else can, or will, and proves she is the Most Awesomest Of Them All. And there's sex in there, or at least the promise of sex with a terribly hot bishi boy (or boys, plural), but it is generally more or less tasteful and retains its R rating. I'd like to say I'm too good for this, but I seem to keep reading them, don't I? And worse than that, I seem to keep enjoying them.

It's not a bad book, don't get me wrong. The writing is competent enough for me to not be drawn out of the narrative by the awkward phrasing or poorly-conceived blocking that tends to trip up writers in this burgeoning genre. It's easier to notice when something is bad than when it is good, and in this case what I noticed most was (AGAIN) poor copy-editing. Misuse of homonyms, leaving off letters, missing words, random spaces in the middle of words...things that a human should have caught, but a spell-check program might not.

exciting and entertaining until the very end. I liked that the heroine was kick ass but still believable enough to be relatable. great story and a good read for anyone who likes fantasy!

I really enjoyed revisiting the world of Alex Craft, even if I did downgrade my original 5* rating to a 4*.

I'm looking forward to picking the next book up soon.
