3.5? 4? Not really sure. It took me a little while to get into the rhythm of Mailhot’s writing, but once I did, I do think it was very powerful. It is the kind of book I feel like I should be dissecting and discussing and writing my own essays on its use of style and theory for school...some of it (particularly the afterword) seems like it’s meant specifically to be read by those with higher degrees in writing and literature...but maybe that’s just me.
Beautiful, raw, heartbreaking - a short read that packs a lot of punch.
A little hard to read/listen to, because there's so much rawness and pain, but it's also so well written. "Lyrical" is one word that comes to mind.

This memoir was beautiful because it is so raw and showcases the author’s vulnerability with an eloquence that rivals famous poets. You won’t regret reading it, because it packs one heck of a punch to the heart, but will also motivate you to overcome challenges.
I am not giving this a star rating because I didn't get it. As someone who doesn't really care about beautiful prose, I didn't notice the beautiful prose that other readers noted. But don't blame the author based on my review. This was probably just above my head. People can tell their stories and whatever way they want to. But I found this whole cyclical situation toxic. I couldn't tell whether or not the cycle has now been broken, but I hope the author and her family find wellness and wholeness.
Was really looking forward to this book, but unfortunately didn’t connect to the cynical, direct, and disjointed writing style. There were a few beautiful lines and metaphors, but this book is a trauma dump. I don’t feel like I’ve gleaned any new knowledge or insights about the native community, but I’m glad that the author has an artistic outlet to help her heal.
