Technically I started this book about 2 months ago, but nonfiction has been hard for me lately between trainings, life, and work so I had switched over to romance and YA.
Coming back to this book was in part something a client mentioned about it, and in part being American Thanksgiving and wanting to be intentional about reflecting on the Indigenous experience in North America.
This was a really beautifully written memoir. It felt like a series of therapy sessions (hence the reference from a client) and built to a better understanding of what has contributed to where she was and how she is seen by others. 4.5 stars. Maybe 5 stars later. Need to sit on it more.

This memoir was full of beautiful, intimate essays from an indigenous woman who has incredible writing skills. My heart ached for her throughout the entire book.
Her writing is powerful and poignant, and I would read anything else that she ever published. This book will be etched in my mind for years to come.
The first half of the book or so is a little all over the place, so it does take some getting used to at first. I also listened to the audio book, and wasn't really a fan of the narrator. Reading a physical copy is definitely the way to go.

This is an important book and I'm glad I read it, even though I had trouble fully connecting to it.
This book overwhelmed me with the emotions it engendered.
Earnest and honest and visceral.
Buying a copy so I can underline things and reread. (So many things to underline)

This memoir felt like reading someone's diary. Mailhot talks honestly about a variety of pains in a very poetic way, it's not always easy to read but it's beautifully written and definitely got me thinking.

A book that is a masterclass in affective sentimentality. Mailhot presents the masterful feelings that accompany heartbreak, lovesickness and obsession while wrapping it within a reality of mental illness. The prose is written like poetry at times, and the rootedness in Mailhot's Seabird Island Indigenous cultural perspective is refreshing. I long for the accompanying backstory of the writing itself, but here Mailhot lets it speak for itself. Both brave, and yet, leaves so many more questions to be answered.
this book spoke to me in ways I could not imagine. such a good read.
Very short; beautiful memoir of loss, love, mental health; another review called her writing style “dreamy” and that’s a perfect word for it. Poetic, almost, stream of consciousness style. Really enjoyed it
I listened on audiobook & don’t feel like I spent enough time with it. Want to get my eyes on this and really soak it up because it’s so unique and I feel like it’s really something special.
