The book does a good job depicting the experience of mental illness and challenges with getting diagnosed and medicated. She is not a likable character perse, but that is in part the illness. The book was well written and funny in a dark way and the author does a good job exploring the nuances of mental illness on relationships and life trajectory.

This book wrecked me in the best way. I’ve never felt so seen. Martha’s constant tug-of-war with herself, the way she stumbles, self-sabotages, and still tries to keep going feels painfully familiar. At its heart, Sorrow and Bliss is about living with an undiagnosed mental illness and how that shapes every relationship, every attempt at love, every false start. It’s for anyone who has ever felt unlovable, wanted love desperately, and then fumbled it the moment they had it. It’s sad, but also tender, and by the end there’s a flicker of hope that lingers, which I really appreciated.
