Slow slow slow. I've tried to read it about 5 times and I just couldn't get into it.

The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne is a murder mystery and crime thriller novel. It’s the first book of four in the series by the same name and introduces readers to Professor Theo Cray. He is a computational biologist who has created a computer program that sorts through points of data and finds patterns. When a prior student of his is found mutilated in Montana while he is also doing research there, he searches for clues. The police think the killer is either a grizzly or Theo. But who or what is the killer?

Theo is not an easy person to connect with. He considers himself socially ignorant and others view him as unemotional because he doesn’t show them the emotions he is feeling. He sees patterns where others don’t, but he doesn’t do a good job of explaining how he arrives at his conclusions.

The story starts off with an intriguing chapter and doesn’t let up after that. The plot is twisty and has exciting scenes and a mysterious larger-than-life antagonist. The settings were incredible and the mystery moves the story forward and through some unexpected twists. The pacing is generally brisk. My biggest quibbles are that it is somewhat far-fetched at times and the ending was somewhat abrupt and didn’t provide the full closure that I wanted.

Overall, this is a book that kept me turning the pages to see what would be discovered next. It’s a tense and exciting novel that gripped me from the beginning. This was a good start to the series.

I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date October 1, 2017.

This book was a complete bore. I found the writing to be extremely elementary. The author tended to write a paragraph about what the narrator was thinking and then go on and on and on until the same thought came out in the next page. It was very odd and I had to stop reading after my head spinning and thinking "I could be reading something I actually enjoy"

This books is not interesting, not thrilling and needs a better editor.

I'm torn on this one. There were points like the droning on about the string variations in DNA reading strings of ongoing numbers and letters... It wasn't important to the plot aside from painting him as having a scientific mind which we had already established. The plot was pretty good and not too far-fetched to not be enjoyable until around chapter 69... it all just got too far beyond the stretch of probability, enough that it made me roll my eyes. It could have been a 4-star read for me if I didn't have to suspend my belief so often.

The main ends up being a little over the top, but overall, I highly enjoyed this, especially the setting. I'll read on in the series.
