Told in three different parts - a. Flora's experience years prior being held captive, b. Boston detective DD is investigating a dead man and now a missing girl c. current Flora and her adventures.

The eighth book in a series and only the second the series that I have read. This is one of those series where the case is self contained, but the detective characters have stories that build from one book to the next. I don't love reading out of order and not having read the first in this series, but it isn't necessary.

I hate to say it, but this series is starting to get a little boring. The plots are getting soapier and soapier and the voice of the person of interest doesn't change between books. I still really like D.D. as a character and am only really reading for her. Flora, on the other hand, I feel like I've read over and over again. Her circumstances are different, but otherwise her voice is identical to all the other down-on-her luck, something-bad-is-coming-and-only-I-can-prevent-it, rough, cynical, strong-girl, person of interest in every other D.D. Warren book.

This was a really great thriller revenge story. There were hidden surprises throughout the entire book. I highly recommend reading this.

This is *technically* a mystery, which I don't normally like to read. However, I had a "non-reading" friend recommend it to me, ON audio, so I felt like I really had to give it a shot. I waited a number of years for its popularity to die down (I'm a slow reader, so I don't like to read brand-new things, if I can help it, because the pressure to zip through it in three weeks is too great!) and I gave it a shot. Wow! It didn't read like a typical mystery, in my opinion.

I really loved the way this story went back and forth between Flora (the girl who was kidnapped) and D.D., the detective in charge of looking for her. They've got such different personalities, and yet, they're similar in their tenacity and their hardness.

At one point, like halfway through the book, I thought I had it figured out. I was 100% sure I'd gotten it, and I was a little disappointed that it was going to take the other 1/2 of the book to get to what I already knew. I even made a note in my reading journal about it, which I never do (about that sort of thing). Guess what? I was WAY wrong!!! I was so glad!!! I didn't want to spoil the book for myself by figuring it out so early. Yay! This book was amazing, and I may even go back and read more by this author. Oh! And I didn't realize until I came to write this review that it is #8 in a series. I think I had an idea that it was part of a series, but I thought it was the first one. I really felt like it could stand alone. Props to Lisa Gardner!!!

3.5 stars. Reeeeaally slow start. But the end was worth it! Definitely a book to consider if you like twists and turns.

The writing is just eh. Some chapters read effortlessly, while others are composed of lazy sentence fragments or information you’ve been given multiple times already. You can tell it’s someone’s 20th book under a deadline, not some grand idea they’ve spent years agonizing over the details of. Still, the story as a whole is better than other female-authored murder/rape/stalking/kidnapping/crime books I’ve read, and I appreciate the author opting not to include unnecessary rape scenes.

I’d read more of her books, though it’s not likely I’ll seek them out. And I’ll return this one to the Little Free Library where I found it.
