Well, this is a first. Two stars always felt too harsh to me, but I just couldn’t with this book.
It all stems from one very OBVIOUS thing that is lacking; character depth.
Who was Aileese—besides a Bone Crier/Siren—you ask? I HAVE NO IDEA. She was literally just some girl had to kill some guy to secure her role in her society of Bone Criers. No depth to her character at all. We got no backstory, no unique traits, no development, no nothing.
Who was Basiten—besides a wanted thief who also wanted revenge on the Bone Criers—you ask? I HAVE NO IDEA. He was literally just some guy who had to kill some girl for revenge. No depth to his character at all. We got no backstory, no unique traits, no development, no nothing.
They were both so surface level that it hurt.
The one ATTEMPT made at character development was only present in Sabine; a side character who went from being entirely afraid of everything involving death, to setting traps to kill people. Even the development there wasn’t enough for me, however. She was told some very...random truths which made her seem so gullible. She easily changed her mind and decided that she needed to be better at killing (which was her entire purpose), and her immense fear of killing was just...sort of...gone.
But that’s just it; because I could literally give two shits about them, I could give literally two shits about their story.
Sure, Basiten was some guy out for revenge because his father was killed. Cool. Got it. Let’s go get revenge. But let us ALSO hear more about that. Let’s plunge into what led you here in more depth. Let’s discuss how it affected you growing up not having a father, let’s hear more about your struggles, how you became this wanted thief and had to do shameless things to get by. It was literally mentioned twice that he “lived a hard life” and never again. Like that’s all the backstory we get? Not cool. That makes Bastien just some random who I could care less about.
Same with Ailesse. She had a mother who was harsh, a future she didn’t want. Sure, she mentioned that. Sure, her mother came off as a grade-a bitch, but like GIVE ME MORE. There wasn’t much history about the Bone Crier’s either. Not enough to keep my interest, anyway. So just like Basiten, Ailesse became some random girl I could care less about.
The plot overall could have been flushed out better. The constant fighting became stale real fast for me. It felt messy. Everyone just screaming “no don’t kill her” “no don’t kill him” and the author just using convenient ways for everyone to survive each encounter. It was...well, annoying, and I just wanted the book to end.
I know that there will be a sequel, but this first installment didn’t captivate me enough to even consider continuing. And I hate that I have to say that.

Love how the characters are now working together to save their now friend and I’m interested in what will happen in book 2 (was reading and listening to the audiobook)
I just could not get into this book at all. I really wanted to love it, but it never clicked for me.

i really wanted to like this more. it had a really good premise, but some of the plot and writing itself just fell flat for me.

The magic system in this book was really cool, I think that was the only draw to keep reading.
I was bored through most of the book but I’m interested enough to see if the second one gets better

I can‘t really agree with the whole ‚animals dying for the greater good‘ type thing - and for the first half of the book I didn‘t really connect with any of the main characters. But I was still very much hooked, love the concept and really enjoyed reading it. For me it was a little bit too insta-lovey with Ailesse and Bastien but oh well, it‘s fine I guess.
Also why are so many authors of these books located in Utah? Not a fan.

**I received an ARC for a blog tour. These are my honest opinions, and in no way was I compensated for this review.**
This book has been on my radar for so long because of that cover! It’s so ethereal; I can’t stop looking at it. Bone Crier’s Moon was a thrilling read with wonderful worldbuilding and great characters.
The worldbuilding was really detailed. I found the mythology of the Bone Criers incredibly well thought out, and I liked that we’re introduced to it gradually over the course of the book without any info-dumping. (Also, this is the French-based world that I didn’t get in a certain other high profile release.)
There are three protagonists, which made the pacing of this book much faster. Ailesse is the confident heir to the matrone of the Bone Criers; she’s ready to complete her final ritual and become a full-fledged Ferrier, a Bone Crier who helps lead the dead to either heaven or hell. Sabine is her steadfast friend, who is considerably less enthralled in the rituals that are necessary to be a Bone Crier. Bastien is seeking revenge for his father, who was killed by a Bone Crier years ago.
The plot begins when Bastien appears at Ailesse’s amoure ritual, intent on killing her and getting revenge for his father’s death. It all goes downhill from this, as neither of their plans go as they wanted. Bastien takes her hostage, and Sabine vows to save her.
Honestly though, all of the points-of-view sounded the same, voice-wise. It was difficult to tell the difference between who we were following, especially because they’re all in first person. They were also all very single-minded; all of their characters can be summed up in one sentence: Ailesse is dedicated to achieving her final ritual; Bastien wants revenge; and Sabine wants to save Ailesse. So yeah, all of this got kinda old, especially Sabine’s chapters because literally every other chapter she was like, I will save you, Ailesse! without much happening. I just wish she had more of a plot line other than that, but this will probably change in the next book.
The plot was really fast-paced, and I could never tell what was going to happen next. The romance was nice; this is an enemies-to-lovers book, but I’ll admit that transition from enemies to lovers happened too quickly without much development for my tastes.
Overall, though, Bone Crier’s Moon was a good fantasy with amazing worldbuilding and lovely characters. It just wasn’t my favorite, personally, but I do think a lot of people will love this book. I’m excited to see what will happen in the next book though!

With divine gifts, they lure, they kill.

This is the boy the gods chose for me, and I’ve killed him already, just by playing a song.

Can't wait to read the sequel! Left on such a cliffhanger.
This is a great YA enemies to lovers with a really interesting magic system. Definitely worth the read!
