Pretty good. The world was really interesting. Very action-packed.
The whole book just felt like it was missing something. Maybe it was the lackluster romance, or I just wanted to know more about the characters, or maybe the world-building could've more fleshed out??
Lost interest around 70%

I vibe with the animal graces, the rituals, and the ferrying, but the plot was difficult to follow at times and the random character in the end??
Going into this book, I was expecting something completely different, and yet, I loved it (mostly due to the world building.) I couldn’t completely buy into the romance but it was still fun to read.
“Tu ne me manque pas. Je ne te manque pas.”
This book simply took my breath away with the enchanting plot, just the way the Bone Criers or Ferriers took their amourés breath away when they sing their special song.
I had just finished Edith Wharton’s “The House of Mirth” last night when I thought of what I would read next that wouldn’t be too heavy for my lil brain. And I decided to pick this up with Nana as we did planned to read this one together. We were at the same pacing at first until I got fully immersed in the book that I was already at Chapter 27 or so when she was still in Chapter 11. Yes, I was so into it, I was so focused, my fingers just keeps flipping the pages and here I am.
The world reminds me so much of Shelby Mahurin’s “Serpent & Dove” (which is one of my favourite book ever), it is set in old France sort of. The magic element that this book has, is so so SO interesting. Like it keeps you wanting to find out more of how the Bone Criers magic system work especially with their amourés. The hunting too was really interesting to read about though it might be a little gory to some people because it has descriptions on how the animals were hunted/killed. But aside from that, everything about this book is simply interesting down to the characters.
“I’m my mother’s daughter, and she’s just dared me to prove it to her.”
Ailesse just wants to prove herself to her mother, the Matrone. She just wants to prove that she’s capable of being just as great as her mother. And I really felt that as a person who always strives to impress EVERYONE (literally, I do this everywhere, anywhere, at any time on anything). Her friendship with Sabine is so so SO pure. Literally Nana and I if we’re both fictional characters. We’re in nowhere related by blood but we are at a point where we’re basically sisters.
“I don’t care what the silver owl or even Ailesse wants me to do.
I’m not giving up on my sister.”
I love love LOVE Sabine’s character so much. Like I said before, she has no blood relations to Ailesse, they were the best of friends but even more than that too, they’re sisters. When Ailesse was taken hostage and the Matrone told her to stay put for she didn’t have enough grace bones (I think that’s what they’re called), she still work her way out to find her sister no matter what it takes. Her determination is what I adore the most.
“If the Bone Crier wants a soulmate, I’ll give her one. I’ll give her me. Then I’ll break her.”
Bastien was probably one of the most frustrating character I’ve read about. And by frustrating, I mean the good kind of frustration. At the beginning of the book, Nana and I were literally TERRIFIED of his fury. The grudge he held towards the Bone Criers were so long to the point where all his thoughts were about his hatred towards them and how he’d finally get to kill one of them... in “nine more days”. This dude literally started out in the book looking like the psychopath but the prologue totally explains why though and it is tragic so it is understandable I’d say. I love how much he cares for Marcel and Jules too. They’re all like siblings altogether, bonded by the fact that they all lost their fathers to a Bone Crier. His character was a bit dry the firsr half of the book but then he starts making my heart go all pitter patter pitter patter.
However, the reason this book lost one star from me was how fast the pacing of everything was. And by that I mean, the development of Ailesse and Bastien’s relationship. I hoped it would’ve been more progressive instead of going that fast. But I do love them both though. It’s just the progress of it all seems a little too fast for me. Also, like I said before, Bastien’s character were dry in the beginning. He had a traumatic childhood yes, but we really started off with him hating the Bone Criers to death? Would’ve loved to see my dude get some life things going you know. Go to a 19th century French bar and plan out the plan that he had or something. That would’ve been fun. But he did managed to capture my heart eventually so yay to that
