I really enjoyed the magic system of this world! The characters were just okay. I enjoyed Sabine and her character arc, but I couldn’t get behind the romance plot line with Ailesse and Bastien. The timing and pacing was a bit off, but I’m interested enough to read the sequel!

Hard to write this. I loved the magic and the WOMEN and the friendship and the world. Hated the love, hated the ending (seriously, YA authors--get over the cliffhanger-wait-a-year-to-release-the-conclusion). Hated some of the major gaps in the plot. Why couldn't the mother and gods be the continual focus. Why, why, WHY bring in a cliche love triangle for book 2? I love Sabine's growth, and the French elements and I love Ailesse's ferocity (until stupid Bastion). I don't think Bastion should get his own voice. It takes away from the awesome women. Maybe I'll forget about book 2 and I won't read it?
Truthfully- I think I went wrong by trying to get through the audio book. The world building was great, but I personally just couldn't get into the story line the way that I would have liked.
I absolutely flew through this. I loved every single second of this story and I need the sequel asap.
Honestly, I was shocked at how quickly I fell into this story! I wanted more! I am looking forward to reading the second one.
Bone Criers Have A Sacred Duty
They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living. But the powers they have to ferry the spirits of the dead into goddess Elara's Night Heavens or Tyrus's Underworld comes from sacrifice. The gods demand a promise of dedication- at the cost of the Bone Crier's one true love.
Ailesse has been preparing since she was born to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers. But first she must complete her rite of passage, killing the boy she's destined to love.
Bastien's father was slain by a Bone Crier when he was a boy and since then he's been seeking revenge. Yet his vengeance comes too late. Ailesse's ritual has begun and now their fates are intertwined in life and death.
Sabine has never had a stomach for the work of a Bone Crier. Yet when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive she will do whatever it takes to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.
There was that pulse pounding opening, then a build up to what would catapult the story into a full blown action packed story. I found myself invested in the friendship between Ailesse & Sabine, irritated with some of Bastien's friends and over time wondering if that bond could truly be broken. As I turned each page that thirst for revenge played out, the desire to fulfill a long awaited destiny, and a friend's relentless search to find her best friend came alive in a ways I never thought possible.
Each driven by one thing only to have things climax in a way I never saw coming and couldn't even tear my eyes away from. As with each narration things slowly come to light and whatever motives were there at the start took a bit of a surprising turn. I really enjoyed the pacing once it got going and the more the story developed and the characters changed and grew. By the end I'm thinking what just......!!
It was an enjoyable fun, hard to put down wild ride. Of which I'm so thankful there is going to be a heart pounding second.

This is an intriguing story with high stakes and a fast-paced race against time! The relationship between Sabine and Ailesse is nice to see. The legends and lore of the Bone Criers, as they are gradually revealed over the course of the book, is fascinating. The ending really makes me eager for the sequel.
