This book definitely kept my attention with the fast pace and constant raising of stakes. The concept is really cool and I was a fan of the magic system’s uniqueness. This book unfortunately really lost steam about three quarters of the way in and then just sort of sputtered to the finish line without much cohesive or rewarding conclusion.

Bastien and Ailesse went from “I’m reluctantly starting to like you” to “I would die for you” love way too quickly. It felt rushed and as though there wasn’t any actual depth of their emotions. I’m kind of torn on whether I like that Bastien wasn’t Ailesse’s amouré, but that felt like something to be unraveled in book two and I’m not sure I’m intrigued enough to stick around.

I also really wish Sabine had stuck to her guns of no killing any more animals. I think she would’ve been a really interesting foil character, but instead she sort of became a watered-down Ailesse and that was not super interesting in my opinion.

Super addicting and fast-paced read. I thought the concept of the story was really interesting, Bone Criers who gather strength from bones of animals they’ve killed to ferry the souls of the dead to either the gates of heaven or the underworld. My favorite part of the book was definitely the characters. We read from 3 different perspectives and I really liked all of them. They were very distinct in the personalities and in their character growth. Also who doesn’t love a good star-crossed, enemies-to-lovers trope?

One of the best books that I have read this year! The plot, characters is so good!

If you want to read enemies to lovers, books with mythology, fantasy and female protagonist with daggers (wink, wink*) Then go read this book!
