Quick review since I’m jumping right in to book two. It’s a love triangle between a girl and two brothers. She was raised a pirate all her life and discovers an under water world full of ocean people and witches. Her dad is the king and one of the brothers was raised as the kings ward after she went missing as an infant. Arranged marriage with the sweet brother but has a weird electric connection to the dark and broody brother. It definitely gives off Elena, Stefan and Damon vibes. It’s YA and she’s 17 and actually acts like a 17 year old. All there is in terms of spice is some kissing and I feel like it isn’t going to go much further than that, which I’m okay with. Just FYI to fellow readers that are hoping for smut, it probably isn’t going to happen.
Overall I loved the book and will be recommending it to my 13 yo niece that loves to read. It’s perfect for her.

I'm not going to leave stars for this review as it seems unfair, after all I'm not in the target group, but it would be a 2-3 star read for me.
I tend to pick up books based on recommendations without reading the blurb, which is on me, but which made the abrupt appearance of a romance subplot an absolute whiplash. I don't like reading romance unless it's very good, and the romance in The Sunken City is not good: it's cliched, predictable, annoying and completely unnecessary.
Amare starts out as a compelling main character and at first, the adventure seems interesting, but the quality of the plot takes a nose dive immediately once we get into The Sunken City. It feels like fanfiction, like a high school AU for the author's own world. I don't think modernising the city brought anything interesting into the plot, if anything, it would have been much more interesting to keep to the golden age of piracy.
There are some good parts, like the beginning and the end, but it does not make up for the trope-riddled cliched book that the rest of The Sunken City is.

Really cool story of almost a reversal of the little mermaid but with magic. Major cliffhanger at the end of the book, and definitely want to continue the story!
3.5⭐️- So I’d like to say that with the exception of a few scenes in this book, it would have been a cute middle grade story. I honestly forgot at times this was YA (not much different at times if you ask me), but there was some adult language and a suggestion of attempted SA of a minor during a memory moment.
Only because it ended in a cliffhanger that I can’t say was satisfying enough to leave it at book one, I’ll continue the series to see where it goes. Easy read though and overall I think it’s okay.

At first I wasn’t sure about this book. It had a bit of a slow start. I am so happy I kept with it though. The author does a really great job of building this world without losing the story in descriptive details. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and can’t wait the get my copy of book 2 in the mail soon.
Narrator and prose voice far too juvenile
Genre bending YA with some really creative and unique world building.
overview: I was honestly enjoying this and interested in reading more but unfortunately the content steadily made me more uncomfortable so I DNFed :(
content: language (slowly becomes more frequent. Variations of d*mn, Godd*mn; h*ll, bastard, prick; a*s, sh*t; “what the devil”; “God be good” “God”;). sexual (girl says she doesn’t waste time on straight women). other (“By its very nature, pirating requires that you break one of God’s Ten Commandments—Thou shalt not steal booty—so there’s no point in obeying Christian morals anyway, is there?” Mentions of witches, witchcraft, other mythical creatures/gods and magical elements).
