dark emotional reflective slow-paced

Fun Home follows bechdel’s life in a  through different moments in her life , exploring a complicated relationship with her dad. there is actual little focus on the fun(eral) home as a setting, but mortality is a constant theme. i liked the choice to reveal things about her father slowly over the course of the novel - it feels in line with how bechdel discovered her father’s secrets. at times the story can get a bit heavy, so it was a slower read than other graphic novels for me.

A brutally honest portrayal of Bechdel's dysfunctional family. Things are not as they appear on the surface.

just me, you , and this gothic wall of literary references you've built between us

I enjoyed this, especially the non-linear way the story was told, mixing different moments from different times in the authors life without being confusing. The medium of graphic novel was used very, very well. Though i have no problem with verbose writing and I enjoy literary references there were moments where it was a touch too much for me, especially as someone not super familiar with usamerican-centric literature references from that time. Another person i know couldn't connect to it at all because they don't read a lot, so i can see that. Would like to reread it sometime.
