Simple story with no ups and downs. There could’ve been more focus on how the relationship between the main characters developed. There was more writing about each character’s individual problems than their problems together as a couple. Not much romance in it.

Lord Oliver York, the new Earl of Carlisle is looking for a bride with a dowry so he can settle the debts owed for his estate and take care of his people. Grace Halton needs to find a groom quick so she can get her dowry and return to America and her sick mother.

Two people in dire need of money and an unexpected meeting at a ball. He wants to help her and be her knight in shining armor. She also wants to help him but doesn't feel like she could marry him and leave like she has planned. Throw in some mean grandparents and let the fun begin.

I really enjoyed this story. I could share and understand the feelings of both characters. Ms. Ridley did a excellent job with this story and I can't wait to read the next one.

I don't know why I was reluctant to begin reading this book, it was a very good surprise, really ! I loved the characters, the story, the background stories and I can't wait to read the next.
I mean, I know I'll wait because I'm cleaning my e-reader this year, but when I'm done, the next Duke of war will definitely be on my to read list :)

Very light. Some pleasant scenes where the H&H are anxiously not-falling-in-love. Ultimately, the blatant plot manipulations take away any sense of real characters.

"3.5 out of 5 stars! Oliver comes home from war to find out his father has died and now he is an Earl of a failing inheritance. Grace (an American) enters into the London "Season" in hopes of gaining a husband who wouldn't miss her and would be nice enough to let her use her dowry in hopes of helping her ailing Mother. They meet, start up a friendship between one another, and realize that nothing more should happen between them. Yet their hearts have other plans...

Okay, even though I agree this novel has some meaningful scenes, a lighthearted flair, and while Oliver (Earl of Carlisle) & Grace throw off plenty of hot attraction, all I could think of after finishing it was, "Oh my that was CUTE!" "

This is a difficult book to rate.
I have trouble discerning if the problem was actually with the book or with my frustrated expectations.

I LOVED the prequel to this series, I gave it 5/5 stars. If you follow my reviews you know how rare such a thing is.
So I went into The Earl's Defiant Wallflower expecting more light-hearted romance, with a lot of humour in the mix.

I instantly disliked the main characters. Why? I don't really know :/
I thought Grace was too forward for the time period, even if she was American. I didn't find Oliver interesting enough.
And there was an air of contemporaneity, especially in the dialogues and the characters actions that clashed quite violently for me with the time period during which this story took place.

Also, I dislikes the excessive angst and the instant attraction that occurred.
All of this book felt so rushed! The prequel, a novella, was actually longer than this, I think?

Still, it's an Erica Ridley story, so it is well written, and compelling.
It just didn't work for me, and that is rare when it comes to her books, so please, everyone else, give it a chance!
