This was a cute book that puts you in a spooky mood - perfect for the months leading up to Halloween (or anytime... sometimes you just need a spooky mood)! Having the young female protagonist as the witch hunter instead of the witch is unusual, especially for juvenile fiction, which really intrigued me. It skews away from the very basic Halloweentown vibe of juvenile magical worlds and much more towards the Buffy the Vampire vibes which was kind of scary and not really what I was in the mood for (my "basic bitch" Halloween craving happen first... scary stuff comes later LOL). The witches in this book were truly evil but I wish I had a little more of their background too along with Rosie and her ghost friends. Anderson leaves a lot of her world blurry which some may appreciate because it's open to interpretation. I felt myself craving a little more explanation of the witches and ghosts but maybe that will become clearer as the trilogy continues.

The Memory Thief by Jodi Lynn Anderson sees Rosie Oaks on a mission to save her mom's memories!

Will Rosie stop the Memory Thief from stealing any more memories?

Rosie Oaks
Rosie was born to a mom who doesn't seem to remember her every time she wakes up. Until Rosie discovers why her mom doesn't seem to remember her or anything except how to talk, eat, and do other things. Well, she has notes to remind herself, but that's beside the point. All Rosie has ever wanted was for her mom to be like the mom who readied her room, waiting for her arrival. Rosie was a dreamer, writing her stories that she always made as a happy ending that she wanted for her mom. I love how Rosie is into writing and how she wants to save her mom. The author made me sad about how Rosie has been taking care of her mom while not letting anyone know how bad it actually is. Rosie is a fighter, and I love how she takes on her family's job.

I think Rosie is a strong character now, but will find out how strong she truly is throughout the series. She will need to be to save the world from evil witches with her words and weapon.

The Story
For as long as she can remember, Rosie Oaks loved to invent stories. Stories that have happy endings but also a root of truth in them while also being fictional. She has always loved reading and writing them. Stories have kept her safe until she has decided to burn them. See, Rosie thinks by burning them, she will grow up like her best friend Gemma, aka Germ, and be into boys and other things like that. Except it does something different. It allows Rosie to see the world as it is and opens her up to follow her family's destiny of being a witch hunter. Well, just the Oaks's destiny.

I would have been shocked just as Rosie was to learn that I came from a long line of witch hunters. I love the author's take on a different fantasy story. So, I can't wait to read the other books in this series when I have the time. It's definitely one that I would love to finish and to see how Rosie and her mom's relationship ends up becoming.

Five Stars
I am giving The Memory Thief by Jodi Lynn Anderson five stars and a recommendation for anyone looking for a good series. It doesn't have to be just kids who could read this book to fall in love with it. I loved it, and I'm an adult. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. Ms. Anderson has done a phenomenal job of creating this world. It is definitely a different take on a fantasy world within our world.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of The Memory Thief by Jodi Lynn Anderson.

Until the next time,

This immediately grabs you and doesn’t let go. Literally, heart-pounding adventure from the start. Each chapter solves one puzzle piece and gives a hint of the next one needed. Great for a read together story, though it may keep everyone up past their bedtime because you won’t be able to stop!

Anderson does such a brilliant job breathing life into all her characters, whether witch or girl or ghost. Her background mythos is unique and beautiful with a moon goddess, cloud shepherds, phantom blue birds, ghost spiders, and more. I also love how there is no sympathy towards her witches. These are not misunderstood old ladies from cozy folktales, or cartoonish bad guys from Disney fairytales, these witches are scary. Looking forward to more in this series. Highly recommended.

If you listen to the audio book, the narrators slightly European lilt adds the perfect youthful tone to rosies voice. It is delightful.

I read this book. The beginning book in a series that will be a good read for anyone who likes fantasy.

Rosie lives either mom in a small town on the coast of Maine. Her mother barely acknowledges her existence let alone actually care for her. Rosie’s makes the best of it. Her best friend Germ is growing up and making new friends. Rosie decides she needs to quit being so child like and burns her stories. Very soon after she starts seeing ghosts. She learns her mom was a witch hunter. She finds out many things on the quest to fix her mom.

I would suggest this book to anyone. But, especially anyone who needs a reminder that it is okay to feel alone; but, that even when you feel that way you, probably, are not as alone as you feel.
This book is an incredible story of hope and perseverance. I love the relationships that the main character has, and the witch hunter premise! All around it's an amazing read, that I think everyone should give a chance. If only as a reminder that it takes effort to be good, and that it is well worth the effort!
This book was a great reminder for me, even as an adult, that change is not inherently bad; and it hurts people when you try to hold them too closely. I can't wait to read the next one!
