I've been looking for books on perfectionism. I found this one without realizing it was what I've been looking for. Easy to read. So much good information. Challenges unhealthy thiught patterns ingrained in society. Love it.

Less of a social psychology book about laziness and more of a self help book for overworked overachievers on the verge of burnout. The book had very little societal observations, data, or statistics and instead was filled with advice and anecdotes on how to set boundaries and limits on how much you take on in your personal and professional life to avoid burn out. The book also talks about the social structures that lead us to overwork, specifically the psychology that makes us associate how productive we are with how worthy we are of love and acceptance. And wow- right in the jugular with that one. Great read if you enjoyed or feel you will enjoy Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents which is also mentioned in this book on the chapter for not over-working yourself in your emotional relationships.

One thing that I really enjoyed about this book is that it's queer inclusive in a way I haven't seen other self help books be before (It should be noted that the author is trans.) I don't think it's alienating to cis or straight readers, but most of the examples in the book casually mention queer family dynamics, queer communities, and queer people living their overworked lives in the same way another book might casually refer to heteronormative individuals in similar situations. It felt incredibly refreshing to be seen and acknowledged in that way.

I didn't pick this up on purpose as a self help book, but it turned out that I am exactly who this book was intended for, and I found most of the advice in it to be relevant and on point, if not a little surface level. Great introduction to setting boundaries in work in and in life and putting yourself first before taking care of everyone else.
