This book felt like a hot summer day, long and placid. It has quirky characters and a storyline that felt like a long inside joke.

Ok, this book was boring.

I could imagine this as a lovely 90 minute indie movie with subtle performances and slow pensive editing, but as a book it was horribly boring. The literary equivalent of room temperature tea.

‘The Nakano Thrift Shop' has many of the characteristics of much of Hiromi Kawakami’s work: A slow and simple story about ordinary people in everyday interactions where very little happens , but in which we find our characters slowly revealed through their day-to-day dialogues or thoughts. I love the way she writes, but unlike “Stormy Weather in Tokyo”, I really didn’t get it. The characters didn’t provide the spark of interest I needed, and I really couldn’t feel anything for them.
