Loved the protagonist and the world building but the pacing was too slow for me.

Now I understand why R.A. Salvatore is my husband's favorite author. The fight scenes are better than any Hollywood action movie. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I loved this book. A really insightful look into the relationship between the conquerors and the conquered. Not only the warriors and slaves, but the life of the women in this brutal warrior society. A unique magic system and an engrossing culture that only Salvatore could create.
I absolutely loved this book! I bought it because the cover reminded me of the video game Horizon Zero Dawn. This is the first book I read of Salvatore and I was not disappointed. I can’t wait to read more of Aoleyn and the Usgar tribe.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I liked it, but it also felt like it was lacking a bunch of things that I normally enjoy.
Since this book is set in a new setting, with new characters, it spends a lot of time just worldbuilding. Not a problem at all, as I love seeing what direction the author takes the world. A lot of time is spent setting things up that don't pay off in this book though, but hopefully they'll be important in the next?
The same could be said of characters. Largely I feel as if we are introduced to characters, but the author (chaotically) decides to discard them for now and we never really hear from them again.
While I liked this book, I feel that I didn't get a full story from this book. I feel like it was part 1 of X, rather than the first story of a larger saga.

2,5/5. I’ve been a fan of this author for many years, but I’ve always read is book translated in French, it was my first time reading it in English and I was a bit disappointed. I don’t think that my English comprehension is the cause because I often read in this language, probably even more then in French this year, many it’s the book itself, I don’t know. The fact is this book didn’t please me. I had trouble feeling something for the character and picturing them in my head. The story is slow and... I don’t know something feel odd about it, I may give it another try when it will come out in French, because I should and wanted to love it, but didn’t. One good point, Salvatore always is one of the best writing action/battle scenes. So not a bad one, just never really get into it for unknown reason...
It's clear that Salvatore wants Child of a Mad God to be a progressive, feminist novel, and it's almost there, but several moments sabotage his efforts, and show how far we still have to go before we can break away from the genre's tired tropes. That aside, Child of a Mad God is a welcome return to the world of Corona. As a big DemonWars Saga fan, I was thrilled to return, and fascinated by the way Salvatore revealed new things about the world's magic. It can be difficult to return to a world after several years away, especially when you're trying to craft something new, and not just a rehash of the prior stories, but Salvatore succeeds in this. It's familiar and fresh at the same time. The DemonWars Saga is forever cemented in my reader's soul, and Child of a Mad God reminds me of just why I fell in love with Salvatore's novels in the first place.

Maybe it was the narrator... but Salvatore has always been in the basket with JK Rowling for me... Brilliant story tellers, fantastic world builders... not the best writers.
This work's strength is the characters - though the novel is crowded with so many POV's that sometimes it's hard to remember which character you're currently reading. But the overwriting kills, the pace is mostly good, if not slow at times.
But trust me, if you're a die-hard Salvatore fan, you'll love this book. A lot.
