This has all the ingredients I usually love but just can’t connect with the characters for some reason. The insta love I think is part of the problem given how much trauma the fmc has. Probably could have skimmed to the end but with a mile long tbr time to call it at 57%

Lovely story, but massive trigger warnings for domestic abuse and sexual abuse. MASSIVE. Also I could have done without the kinkshaming.

Oh Uma and Ivan, my poor wounded children. Uma moves to a small town because the radio promises that she can get free healthcare after her boyfriend abused her. Welcome to America. When the full extent of the boyfriend's abuse is revealed, I got pretty emotional. Uma's had to be tough as hell, and in this new place, she's slowly putting her life back together. Ivan's her next door neighbor and known for taking in strays. Due to their baggage, the courtship begins slowly, but when they get comfortable with each other, their scenes made me fanning myself! This isn't a typical romance novel with an alpha male and a virginal heroine. They seem like real people (and in fact, Uma gets to dominate sometimes). I need to read more contemporary romance and more Adriana Anders!

This was such a sweet story. Definitely a redemption story and the heroine learns to trust again. So cute!
