Uma is on the run from an abusive ex who literally tattooed his abuse on her. After hearing about a skin clinic that will remove such tattoos for free, she moves to Blackwood, Virginia, taking a job with a mean old lady as her live in help. Ivan Lives next door and has a past of his own--after beating up his sister's ex for hurting her he spent several years in prison. Drawn to him despite her past Uma wants to open up to him but fears he'll find her disgusting.
I got this as an ARC and I enjoyed it okay. I had a hard time getting into it. I liked the premise but it was just somewhat slow. I liked Ivan--a sweet bad boy who liked taking in strays. I just couldn't really emotionally connect to the characters, especially Uma.

I enjoyed that. It was good. I appreciated the depictions on PTSD (I have no personal experience with this so I don't actually know it it's accurate) and the constant fear of the FMC's ex and abuser. I also appreciated the character development, though I would have liked to hear more from the MMC's perspective. The change of heart in the end didn't feel as in character as it needed to be.
Other than this, there were a few things in the story that just weren't up my alley. I appreciated them in the story and they made sence narratively, it just isn't my thing. I also thought the ending felt a bit rushed.

if this was a movie it would be the kind where its filmed in such low exposure that u cant even see anything and the glare is really bad. At least that what it looked like in my head.
It was hard to connect with these characters.

This was a great, emotional, sexy read. Uma has spent months running from her abusive ex-boyfriend and thinks she's finally found a place to lay low and heal. What she didn't expect was to have such a sexy man living next to her hideout. Ivan never expected life to give him a second chance but this ex-con who takes in strays can recognize a soul in distress. He wants to give Uma the chance to recover and heal but he cannot help but fall for her. Two people looking for quiet and release from their pasts find solace and hope in each other's arms. Great read!

I learned about this book from the sales section of Smart Bitches, Trashy Books email! It sounded right up my alley - tortured hero, heroine with a traumatic past finding love together. And then it went even deeper. There's having some flashbacks or referencing past trauma, and there's intense branding/scarring of past trauma that goes on in this book. One of my main catnips is a couple falling in love and also having to deal with past trauma. It reflects my own experience, and there's something about it that keeps me wanting to see how others fall in love while also conquering the past! I've just so happened to read a couple of great books this week that were top-notch and dealt with past trauma well. This book was a lot darker than I had expected -- but a lot hotter, too! The sex scenes are sizzling, and the gruff, tender hearted scarred warrior of a hero also is delicious.
