Russian espionage probably isn't for me... I finished it though, so that says something. Once you get past the sexualization of boob sweat and nipple references, and one completely unnecessary scene at sparrow school, this book isn't too bad. The story feels a little dragged out, and there were a few too many characters... but I enjoyed how every chapter ends with a recipe for a dish mentioned in the chapter. That's worth a full star on its own 😁 That being said, I won't be continuing the series.

Matthews really loves his spy terminology, which at times really weighs the book down, but overall I really enjoyed it and am probably adding the rest of the trilogy to my insurmountable backlog.
Nearly 5 stars, because the ending really got me. 5 star story, 4 star writing. This book had me guessing up until the very end. The author's writing style took a little getting used to, but it wasn't bad necessarily. Great spy story.
I freely admit that giving Red Sparrow five stars is partly nostalgic. A well written, intricate post-cold war spy novel featuring present day US and Russia squaring off? Red Sparrow also isn't overly concerned with technology, cyber-spying, etc. This is just a great, old-fashioned spy novel.
Red Sparrow was overall a pretty good read, I did find it slow in parts and in the last 200 or so pages there was a lot of writing about the administration and I felt disconnected from the main characters and it was hard to get back to them at the end. I felt that the romantic aspect of the book felt very sporadic, like an afterthought, and so I wasn't really invested in them as a couple. I really felt like the entire book could have been done in a lot less pages - a lot of the mid section felt very unnecessary. The ending also felt very rushed and there was no real resolution it just kinda ended. When I finished it I didn't realise it was a trilogy so I was very unhappy with the ending but now that I realise there is more to come I understand it a bit more. However, I will not be reading the other two books in the trilogy, this first book was a laborious one and not exactly my cup of tea.
