Fun little short story and it was a free download from B&N.

The female lead and her friends were interesting but I would have liked more depth/development in the male lead. It was hard to get a sense of anything but stone-face killer. The plot is straightforward, but it really intertwined well with developing Jade Crow's character and I liked the mix. The whole thing read a lot like a prequel to the world/characters so I'm looking forward to everything being expanded upon later.

I see lots of people rating it down just because it's short which is ridiculous. It's a short story, not a novel, and the plot/character depth coincide with that fact. Drives me crazy when people give low ratings for reasons not related to the writing. It's fine if you wish it was longer because you liked it, but don't start reading an 87 page story and think it's going to be some deep complex masterpiece. Not that short stories can't be deep and complex (in before I get links to them) so maybe I just had low expectations for this and they were easily met. =) Plus if you think it has potential then move onto the next one? /endrant

I think the next couple are pretty cheap as ebooks as well so I'll probably pick them up and see where the story goes from here.

Loved it

I thought this was a really awesome and unique story. I can't wait to see where the series ends up.

This book was just okay. I enjoyed the geekery, and the world was interesting. But neither the characters nor the plot were particularly well developed. Things just happened one after another, and then it was over, without me ever feeling invested in what was happening or who it was happening to.

More or less 3,5 stars
A book that looked pretty good but finally, a little disappointed =S
The universe with shapeshifters and wizards is nice, I loved the plot (when you understand what the stuffed animal really is ... OMG !!!) and the characters but I found that it was not enough developed and especially my enormous regret it's the romance : it went too fast, she fell immediatly in love with the alpha badass, entrusted him with all her secrets and finally we directly moved from the first meeting stage to the stable couple stage ...
And I must confess that I wish there are more foreplays ...
In short, a nice book nice but lacking depth

This might just become a new favourite. I liked Jade, her confidence in herself and the general air of 'I don't need a man to make me happy', though there was a really nice budding romance. Let's see what the next book brings. :)

My general thoughts about the first 3 books in this series:

The three books in the bundle I got were Justice Calling, Murder of Crows, and Pack of Lies. They're perfectly fine stories, and I enjoyed reading them. There isn't really a system of magic as much as different classes of being having different powers. There's some extra interest and a little moral ambiguity with the main character (Jade) being what she is. The way she gains extra powers is a little unsettling, and may lead to further complications down the line.

The writing is competent and readable. I was drawn along through all the stories quickly. There's not too much romance, which is fine with me, though there is some.

Not sure I'm invested enough in what's going on to continue the series, but if you need a fast read that has some interesting world-building choices, these books are fine.

I almost certainly got this for free and it was an engaging read. There are definitely some tropes, but I liked seeing a super nerd female protagonist (hence the 20 sided reference) in a different 'hidden magic' setting. There were definitely some plot points I hadn't seen before, which is impressive given how much genre I read. Not convinced I'll pick up the next book, but this had solid resolution for a standalone.

I picked this up looking for female-led urban fantasy, cool magic, 'geek' references, enough action and romance to keep me turning the pages.

I got exactly that, so I'm pretty happy.

Criticism: very short and straightforward plot. No false lead, no twist and turn. Wouldn't have hated a little more story. Loses a star for being SO short and direct.

However, we've got a great protagonist, cool setting, interesting sequel hooks, great cast of supporting characters. All in all, it's a fun and light read, and I'll read more of the series.

Uma narrativa de terror, eu diria, com cenas bem assustadoras. Mas é também uma narrativa de descobertas e de superação, com uma protagonista forte que decide enfrentar seus medos.

Oh, thank the freak!
After repeat failures, ad nauseam ... I finally found something worth reading!
It's just an introduction to the series, but it's all you need to know you want more.

I've seen Aimee Easterling referred to as another Patricia Briggs several times, but I don't get it?
Annie Bellet however? At least with what I've read so far, that's a comparison I can get behind!
Jade Crow may not be a coyote, but she has the skin tone, nationality, and the all important humour and sarcasm [plus a spirit wolf].
I can totally see Alek becoming more Adam like, minus the excess family.

We have Uber scary villains in the back-ground, but hope in our heroes to overcome, and snarky, funny, nerdy side-kicks to fill in the gaps.

I'm in love ❣️
