Five Broken Blades is a multi-pov fantasy following six characters, Sora, Tiyung, Eyun, Mikhail, Aeri and Royo. 'The most dangerous' killers come together in order to assassinate the merciless King.
The writing is ambitious - at best. Juggling multiple perspectives is always hard, and this book made it seem harder. All of the POVs blurred together and it was hard to distinguish between the characters. Having so many POVs seemed redundant as the characters spent most of their time together. You could have halved the number of POVs and it wouldn't have changed anything in the story. Beyond the perspectives, writing itself felt very juvenile.
There's so much telling. It's constantly shoved down our throats how dangerous these characters are, but we're never shown. We're constantly told their feelings, but never shown. It's so outright, that all of it feels corny and not believable.
The pacing is very off. For 70% of the book, not much happens. It's dragged out and very character driven - but there's not much development on the character side either. Sora, is probably the most complex character and even then, it feels like an overstatement. Everyone felt very flat and one-dimensional. The author sets up really complex backstories but the telling and lack of showing, diminishes the impact of their backstories.
The romance, oh my. There is so much romance in this story. Some would say, maybe too much romance. And that's coming from me.

All three romance arcs are sub par at best. There isn't any development, it hits you like a ton of bricks and once, you're just told these characters are so attracted to each other.
Also, there's a weird amount of sexism in this book. Unchallenged, very casual, very 'normalised' sexism. From all four male main characters. It's very odd.
The twists were very predictable. Enough said.
Overall, didn't match the hype for me. I recommend giving this a go if you like character driven stories, and if you get 1/4 quarter in and don't enjoy it, dnf it because it doesn't change.

well, that was disappointing. the writing felt very juvenile and the voices of each narrator were inconsistent. the plot was fine and i liked the pacing, but i hated literally every character except ty and sora. idk how im supposed to root for any of the others when they’ve all done terrible things and haven’t seemed to change much at all. this is what i get for being fooled by a pretty sprayed edge🤷♀️
