Eve in Hollywood

Amor Towles

What a disgrace to have this published.

You can tell that Towles wrote it, his voice shines through, but it’s pretentious, incredibly unorganized, and just a pain to read. I thought that maybe this was scrapped material from Rules, but all of the prose is B-grade when placed against the other novel.

What a terrible book. It was obnoxious to read this. It made me feel sick.

I LOVED [b:Rules of Civility|10054335|Rules of Civility|Amor Towles|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1311705045s/10054335.jpg|14950407]. Alas, I couldn't get into this in the same way. I dislike the experience of reading ebooks, vignettes in general, and was incurious after three years to learn more about Eve.

I still can't wait for his next, though.

I love Amor Towles. This was too short for my liking but it was like a spoonful of sugar after some bitter lemon. A treat!

This series of interconnected short stories picks up the tale of Evelyn Ross (Rules of Civility). While I enjoyed the stories, some of which seem a bit far-fetched, and the writing, I will say that compared to Rules of Civility, it's a lightweight book. As others have mentioned I also wished that the ending wasn't quite as abrupt. But that aside, it was fun and entertaining.

Great writing but there isn't much meat here. The characters are kinda one dimensional and, having never liked Eve much to begin with, there is not much more here to improve on the character.

Very disappointing. I loved the first book. This was a meandering exercise in meaninglessness.

From The Book Wheel:

Oh, how I love Amor Towles. Granted, I’ve only read two things by him, but I’ve loved both of them. Last summer I raved about Rules of Civility and it made my Top 13 Books of 2013 list without a fight, so when he released this novella as a follow-up on my birthday, I was thrilled. Even though it took me a few months to get around to reading it, I devoured it in one sitting and can say that his incredible writing was not a one-time thing.

Although Eve in Hollywood picks up where Rules of Civility leaves off, it is a distinctly independent novella that follows Eve in, well, Hollywood. Each chapter is told by a different person she encounters along the way, all of whom she has a resounding effect on. From shy starlets to movie producers to chauffeurs, Eve touches each of their lives with a nonchalant charm that few can pull off.

For this review and more,

I thought the premise of a novella surrounding Eve's adventures in Hollywood was clever, the execution was well done. The only thing I could have wished was to see more of her and her future, like we saw Katey's in Rules of Civility. Definitely worth the time if you've read Rules of Civility.

A good addition to a wonderful book. I enjoyed seeing Eve from the eyes of new characters. I wanted more :)

Elegant writing but a superfluous plot that wasn't required after Rules of Civility.
