Why aren’t the Riyria books mentioned among all time great fantasy series like LOTR and ASOIAF? Because I’ve now read five of these books and literally all of them have been five stars. They’re all amazing, and this book is no different. It expands on Royce and Hadrian’s story to other great characters in the series like Arista and Alric. There were also other POV’s from Gwen and Hilfred that were pretty good. This book was full of stories that we had heard about in the original, and that made it super fun to see how they unfolded. And lastly, I love Royce and Hadrian as much as any duo in any book series ever. So if you aren’t reading these books yet, you should do so.

Well, half the book is superb.

I generally dislike books that are written with multiple Point of View story lines. Sullivan's books tend to be the exception, but sadly not in this case. It is cool that Sullivan is writing about and fleshing out minor characters from the Riyria Revelations. I mean, it really worked out in The Crown Tower, I love Gwen now. This book however featured one of my least favorite characters, the worthless Hilfred, you know, Arista's bodyguard? Yeah, he sucks even more in this book, and takes up half the page count. And unlike in the first book, there is no meeting of Riyria and Hilfred.

It's a shame that Royce and Hadrian had at most 40% of the page count, because their parts were so much fun.

Read it if you've read the other ones, just know that half the book sucks.

Excellent books!

Royce "Touch her and die" Melborn. He was silent and possessive before it was cool. I liked seeing more of Gwen and Royce's relationship in this book. Although we see their love for each other in Riyria Revelations, I liked seeing their love blossom in this book.

The focus of this book was Rose and Reuben. I loooove Rose. Her story broke my heart. The range of female characters in the Riyria universe is unmatched. Not every girl has to be snarky and badass. It is also nice to see Reuben's story as we get to see the aftermath in Riyria Revelations.

The origin of The Rose and the Thorn. 😭. What Gwen says about Hadrian's future in chapter 24. 😭. The origin of Riyria. 😭

Only issue was because I read Revelations first, I knew what is going to happen in this book, which killed the suspense.

Too short. Intricate and carefully plotted continuation of the back story of the original trilogy. An engaging saga.
