A good prequel. Like the other Riyria Chronicles novel, Mr. Sullivan takes a story well-known to those who read the Riyria Revelations, and fleshes it out in a way most unexpected. The story of Hilfred was quite good, even if I knew how it would go. The origin story of Riyria and the Rose and the Thorn, however, was unexpected, and pretty well done.
My enjoyment was only hampered by the predictability of the plot, which has more to do with the fact that I've already read the Riyria Revelations than any failings in Michael's storytelling ability. That being said, I'm not sure if reading the Riyria Chronicles before Revelations is a good thing, due to how heavy-handed this book in particular is with the villain, who isn't apparent as an antagonist at the beginning of Revelations.
It's still worth a read for those who enjoyed the rest of the series, however.

4 stars because I love this series so much, but I have to say I was disappointed by this one. Not enough Royce and Hadrian for me and too much of the Essendons (although I do appreciate getting a more fleshed out picture of Amranth). I was expecting more private moments between Royce and Gwen, but as always the author kind of dances around their relationship. The inner monolog of Hadrian was good, but didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. Overall good, but not great like the others.
Rather than providing a nice ending to the story, it left me wanting more.

The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter|32177852|The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter (Riyria Chronicles, #4)|Michael J. Sullivan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1500721845s/32177852.jpg|52814219] =)

I’d forgotten how much I hate Saldur. It was great seeing young Hilfred too but it hurts to see this is how his story began. I feel so bad for him and what ends up happening to him. This was a great book, way better than the first one in the series.
