Ajax has committed an offense towards the Gods and is now being punished for it by Athena.
Out of the tree Sophocles plays I read, this was my least favourite one because on the other two plays (Antigone and Oedipus Rex), I finished the reading with a lot of food for thought, whereas in this one not so much. However, I was familiar quite a few of the characters, Odysseus, Athens and Achilles, and I enjoyed the mythological part of this play.
It was also interesting to read about the relationship between humans and Gods, because I obviously knew that Gods had a superior position relatively to mere mortals, but I wasn’t aware that they had the power to kill citizens in the name of a small disrespectful attitude.

Been a while since I've read Sophocles and I certainly have missed it. He was my first Ancient Greek and the Theban Plays gave me a love of Classical Literature that I clearly still have to this day. I haven't read much about Ajax before but I have so much empathy and compassion for him. Only Sophocles could make me like Odysseus. Really great tragic play. Agamemnon and Menelaus continue to be the biggest dicks in literature.
Ajax deserves better, even though he was by no means a good person. I hate Odysseus, and that’s nothing new, but he really did pull through in the end.
rewriting my review because i definitely don't agree with whatever i wrote back then lol. i really feel for ajax because everytime he is mentioned (since the iliad, even before i'm guessing), he just HAS to be compared to achilles. hierarchically inferior to him by truly not much but so very frustrating for his entire life.
i also really like odysseus! truly an honorable man without whom the greeks would've lose the war probably lol
