Another solid entry in the Shardlake series, this time mashing up elements of 'Seven' and 'The DaVinci Code' in the time of Henry VIII. The only grumble is the length, which could easily have been 100 pages shorter and lost none of the enjoyment. First read post the untimely passing of the author, and a shame there will be no lore new Shardlake to enjoy once I get through the series.
Once again - a fabulous read from Sansom who brings history to life. Its great to read a mystery and crime so involved and vivid and he brings this period of history to life so very well. The warring religious factions, the ever present backdrop of the king and his marriages and the seething political climate is captivating. I'm actually sad that I'll have to wait until next year for the 5th book!
I feel like I’ve stumbled on a real treasure with C J Sansom’s Shardlake series. Revelation was absolutely delightful. It engaged my attention straight away and held it gripped from the very first page to the last! This is classic mystery-unravelling and crime writing in the tradition of Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Edith Pargeter. Every single scene advances the plot, there’s no unnecessary fluff, the story is well-constructed and thoughtful. Moreover, Sansom’s writing is subtle, intelligent, and compelling – and so is his protagonist, Matthew Shardlake. I was not able to predict what would happen, or who the murderer was, and the book definitely kept me on my toes. I definitely have to describe Revelation as a page-turner, as I really could barely put it down over the couple of days that I read it. The attention to historical detail is marvellous, but it definitely takes second place to the spurring mystery plot. This is the fourth book in the series but I had no problems whatsoever jumping in at this point; past events are mentioned but they are not crucial at all to know about in order to thoroughly enjoy Revelation.
Don’t really have anything else to say about this one! Short but sweet review from me. I definitely want to read the other books in the series.
