In the end, it was all a bit contrived. The Apocalypse is a much richer text than this tale suggests. That a madman,if such he be, should stick so slavishly to this script was asking too much of the suspension of belief. Added to that the sympathetic view of Cromwell, Cranmer, Catherine Parr and the destroyers, together with the more gruesome scenes, this is not a book to cheer the heart. Me, I’m for Bishop Bonner.
