Probably my favourite book in the series so far. Read it super quickly and thought I had seen the plot twist coming until I didn't.

3.5

This is probably closer to a 3.75 rather than a 3.5 but not my favorite of the series. I of course still love all the characters, but the central mystery of this one was winding, dark, and difficult to follow. My favorite Shardlake mysteries interweave politics with the mystery, and this one was a bit of a departure from the first three as politics take a backseat to a serial killer and religious tensions. It was very dark - which was also mirrored in the side plots/mysteries. In the end I felt that, while the book was enjoyable, it’s not rated as highly as the second or third. I will continue with the series but I will take a break in between the fourth and the fifth; I fear I tore through the 2-4th books too quickly and they could be given more room to breathe.

Not a cheerful read

In the end, it was all a bit contrived. The Apocalypse is a much richer text than this tale suggests. That a madman,if such he be, should stick so slavishly to this script was asking too much of the suspension of belief. Added to that the sympathetic view of Cromwell, Cranmer, Catherine Parr and the destroyers, together with the more gruesome scenes, this is not a book to cheer the heart. Me, I’m for Bishop Bonner.

My favourite Shardlake so far.

Probably the best plot twist and suspense of the series (so far). Held on to the twist until the very end and what post-mystery content there is is tight and builds on the world and the alternate plot loose ends.

Very evocative of the time and a gripping storyline to keep interest until the end of the book.
