Just yapping sorry not sorry

oh yum this book was really good, super interesting cast of characters with many many layers and flaws, developed (imo) magic system with just enough physics to be grounded in reality but not boring, philosophical considerations that were actually interesting and an unexpected additional plot at the end but i just didn’t feel as invested in that as i did in simply following the characters (which i guess speaks to their crafting) ergo four stars

Very good, took me out of my reader hiatus, so I found it really enjoyable and actually very interesting so I would recommend it. It’s also pretty fun to read and I can’t wait to read the next one.

felt like I was reading something written by a middle schooler who just learned what metaphors are.

So so good, but, whilst juggling six narrators, the overarching plot is SLOW! The characters and writing are fantastic enough to make up for it though.

very cool concept and awesome characters. plot and storytelling is a bit lacking in the sense that it was not that easy to follow and some things didn’t make sense, but the creativity was there. fun and intriguing to read but i’ve read better. excited for the next book though! loved the parisa-libby-tristan thing.

a year since reading the self published version of this book meant that i obviously had to read the traditionally published version. (my rating is still the same from a year ago but i couldn’t tell you much about the changes from self pub to actual pub)

• “Two of them were a set, they came together. They didn’t like chasing each other’s tails like stars in orbit but too bad, that’s what they were”

• “If not for her, Nico might not have noticed most of the things he did, and probably vice versa. A uniquely upsetting curse, really, how little he knew how to exist when she wasn't there; his only source of pleasure was knowing she probably felt the same whenever she could bring herself to stomach the admission”

• “It never stopped being outrageous how the older three looked down on Libby and Nico, though it was far more ridiculous when people speculated about separating them; In Reina's mind, they were binary stars, trapped in each other's gravitational field and easily diminished without the other's opposing force. She wasn't at all surprised when she discovered one was right-handed (Nico) and the other left- (Libby)”

• “The day you are not a fire," he said, "is the day the earth will fall still for me”

• "I know exactly what shape she takes up in the universe." he pleaded in explanation. "If anyone can recognize her, it's me”
