I was hoping this book would have stuck closer to the academia of magic. The idea of a bunch of young people getting access to all of human knowledge, magical and otherwise, is a really fun idea. Instead the magic is always used to complicate the dynamics between the cast of characters. Their relationships are the focus of the story, but only a few of them end up changing over the course of the book. Many have juicy secrets, but when they are revealed, there seems to be really no consequences. Although the book starts off quick, it seems to get bogged down and the author ends up adding a rogue element to tie everything together. It’s a shame that the story wasn’t able to live up to its premise’s potential.

I wish the magic was more integrated into the story. Long sections feel like monologues. Complicated characters and a twist at the end. I’ll get the second book.

Okay I loved this book. It wasn’t five stars because it was a little pretentious but I felt very invested in the characters. The plot is fully driven by the characters and their relationships to one another, which is interesting because nothing really happens even though the stakes seem to be very high. But really it’s just a bunch of people who hate each other and it’s very entertaining. I would like the boys to kiss ☝️ if I could have one wish please

I get why some readers love this, but it's 300 pages too long. All the characters are unlikeable and are too similar and blend together. Also, the plot was so thin that it made me question if this book was just about the characters researching, being assholes to each other, and asking questions about their magic (and answering those questions with questions). This was too pretentious for me. But I am not a Dark Academia fan (and this is just one big vibe). I DNF this book a year ago and tried it again for a book club this year and still disliked it.
