Loved this one! Crime thriller but memoir style. A couple of creepy moments plus a nice mystery unraveling with a heavy dose of coming-of-age thrown in. I'm already on to Becoming the Boogeyman.
Such an interesting genre! I thought it would feel like a mystery where you try to decipher who the murderer is, but that really isn’t the case! It’s truly written like a true crime podcast and leaves you guessing what is based in truth and what is not. (In the Author’s Note, Chizmar breaks down where all of his inspiration came from) It’s a first-person perspective and reads more like a story where you’re along for the ride than a book where the reader is an active participant. Not what I was expecting at all, but couldn’t put it down!

3.5 for me!! I enjoyed this book and finished it in 2 days. It definitely felt like I was reading a true crime novel rather than fiction. I enjoyed how realistic it was and the addition of photos was a great touch.

It may take some time to emotionally recover from this one. Heartbreaking, tragic, yet also a wonderful read.

Chasing the Boogeyman is such a unique reading experience! A fictional true crime memoir with smatterings of truth used as inspiration. I can see why some people may be disappointed after reading this, in particular readers looking for a slasher story. The crimes do take place in the late 1980’s - a time when boogeymen were everywhere and criminal profiling was becoming mainstream. But this is written as a true crime memoir, a snapshot of a particular time surrounding the murders of five young women in a small town. So if you’re looking for a serial killer thriller with crazy twists and action, you might want to readjust your expectations. If you’re familiar with true crime memoirs, I can’t imagine you wouldn’t eat this up like I did. The author co-wrote Gwendy’s Button Box with Stephen King, a personal friend of his. I think King fans will really enjoy Chasing the Boogeyman.
