Fun collection of short stories - about love loss comedy tragedy. Witty, dark, and often resonant. But also heart mushy sweet in parts. Best read if you’re feeling the feelings in life!

all of the absurd, complex, hilarious, depressing bojack vibes i’ve missed since the show ended. definitely coming back to some of these stories in the future.

Alcune storie più belle di altre ma nel complesso carino e scorrevole

i really struggled back-and-forth between whether i would give this 2 or 3 stars. it would be a 2.5 rating, if i could.
to preface: i have a relative indifference towards bojack horseman and abandoned the show a couple seasons in. it wasn't that i disliked it, i just didn't really care. i went into this book without any sort of real adoration for the author, more interest from recommendations from friends.
there were some really strong short stories in here, and those were enough to keep me going through it and to finish it in the end. what i liked was just greatly outweighed by what i either: didn't like, or felt indifference towards. it felt a bit like short-story speed-dating, but not quite as charming as that sounds. i found myself skimming through some of the stories. other stories such as rufus and the average of all possible things were lovely, and i was glad to have read them. it reminded me a bit of tabloid dreams by robert olen butler, which i struggled with for similar reasons.
i really wanted to love this, but after months of picking it up and putting it back down, trying to come at it from different dispositions, it just never stuck for me. i have heard from multiple people in my life that listening to the audiobook version is a much more delightful experience, and perhaps i will try that in the future, and it might influence my current opinion.

The Solace: I truly love the collection of short-format and this was so creatively done with short stories, letters, lists, bullets, and poems - a mix of everything but all tied together by the theme of love and all its forms. Bob-Waksberg has an incredible gift of telling human experiences - things we've all been through at some point in our lives - in a most absurd, humorous, and refreshing way. It's like losing the love of your life? Yeah, dinosaur break-ups are rough. I was so thoroughly entertained reading this while also heavily relating to the coming and going of love in relationships.
The Dread: There were a couple of times when I lost the train - there was one story with too many characters and traits for me to hang onto, but it illuminated just how real and easy Bob-Waksberg's character writing is - because even though I couldn't keep track of who was who - I was able to relate to them and assign my identifiers to them.
Overall, this was beautifully absurd and hilariously relatable in the saddest of ways. I definitely recommend it as a wonderful escape and a deeper cut into the love in your life.
