Very quick read verse-novel with great literary allusions; good book for those who enjoy survival novels (Hatchet, etc.)

I was invested in this book. I thought it was well-written and loved the character development. I found the conflict a bit problematic- I didn’t feel it was ever really clear what happened or how it would be possible for the main conflict to happen so quickly. Loved all the literary references.

Gorgeous novel in verse. The spare writing adds drama and keeps the action moving, but there are still memorable phrases worth noting. Maddie is so level-headed and resourceful that, for the most part, she seems to deal well with being left behind when a whole region is evacuated as a result of an "imminent threat". She focuses on gathering the resources she needs to survive and is smart enough to make the neighbor's Rottweiler her companion and protector and use the library for self-education and recreation. The nature of the threat is explained in only general terms - a massive land grab/ unprecedented fraud - and the changes that result in her eventual rescue are also described in the same general terms - elections/new government/conditions returning to normal. Readers can fill in their own details id they want.

This book was more intense than I imagine a middle grade in verse novel to be. Scary, sad, tragic, hopeful. I would’ve liked the ending to be more drawn out and concise, it felt like it came out of nowhere, and not much of the situation was explained. I don’t mind when books leave things open-ended, but I was SO curious about this one!
I would still recommend this to anyone who enjoys survival stories, middle grade or higher!

This novel in verse follows a 12-year-old named Maddie who winds up left behind by everyone when her region is evacuated due to an emergency "imminent threat." This story is one that I think many upper elementary students would both enjoy and feel empowered by, as Maddie's thoughts and feelings remind the reader how much strength an individual can hold.

This book was entertaining but it was like every chapter something catastrophic came and almost killed her but she was safe. Then the author didn’t know how to finish it so she concluded it with her mom came and picked her up in a helicopter. Overall poor and lazy writing and a dumb plot line. Would not recommend this unless you wanted a easy entertaining book to read.

An excellent book for kids ages 8-12 (especially reluctant readers!) about a tween who wakes up to find herself alone in the world.
